Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3-- A collection of 14 tales from around the world. Some of the stories are quite well known (``The Three Billy Goats Gruff,'' ``Little Half-Chick,'' ``Lazy Jack,'' ``The Three Wishes'') while others are more unfamiliar (``The Boy Who Made a Snake,'' ``Why Cat and Rat Are No Longer Friends,'' ``The Wonderful Pear Tree''). The tellings are adequate, but the choice of stories brings together a collection of cautionary tales that makes for pedantic reading. In ``The Boy Who Made a Snake,'' Pablo invents a snake at the spring so he does not have to collect the water. He then discovers this lie has created a real snake who will chase him until he speaks of his lies and obeys his mother. In ``The Eagles of Lost Opportunity,'' an Indian boy fails to collect feathers from eagles that come his way because he does not feel they are adequate, and the eagle ruler sets him high in the mountain top to watch the eagle nest so that he will learn to take advantage of opportunities. And both protagonists are pleased to learn these lessons! The artwork in soft shades reflects the stories' cultures, but the characters often appear too happy for their situations. All in all, these tales are preferable in single-volume editions, such as Galdone's The Three Billy Goats Gruff (Clarion, 1979), than in a collection of highly moralistic stories. --Regina Pauly, Free Library of Philadelphia
