Despite the hunger, despite the lies, even despite the plague, the kids of Perdido Beach are determined to survive. Creeping into the tenuous new world they've built, though, is perhaps the worst incarnation yet of the enemy known as the Darkness: fear.

Within the FAYZ, life breaks down while the Darkness takes over, literally—turning the dome-world of the FAYZ entirely black. A will to survive and a desire to take care of those they love endures in this ravaged band, even in the bleakest moments. But in darkness, the worst fears of all emerge, and the cruelest of intentions are carried out. After so many months, is all about to be lost in the FAYZ?

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

The penultimate novel in Michael Grant's dystopian Gone series pits Perdido Beach's kid survivors against the anarchy caused by the loss of daylight in their dome-world. Zombies, rising tides of violence, and some startling surprises.

VOYA - Stacey Hayman
It has been four months of relative peace in the FAYZ. The killing flu is over, the supersized bugs are gone, and the remaining kids have divided themselves between living under Sam's council at Lake Tramonto or at Perdido Beach with King Caine. Regardless of location or leader, they have all found some degree of success in the everyday struggle for survival. When a dark stain begins to creep upward in multiple locations on the barrier wall, both camps realize this could be the final, fatal blow. If the stain closes out all the daylight, how will kids without a "Sammy sun" keep safe? More importantly, without sunshine, how will anything grow? As the fifth entry in a series of six books, it is a relief to have a few of the original puzzles solved, but the solutions are not absolutely complete, and new queries are ready to take their place. One of the most satisfying revelations is discovering what has been happening outside the dome, but it raises deeper questions about life before the FAYZ. Most threatening moments in the story come from elements beyond the kids' control, giving a bleaker, more desperate aspect to their actions. Adding a layer of tension is the underlying feeling that judgment day is drawing near, but who will be judge and who will be jury? Fans can count on more excellent storytelling, multidimensional characters who continue to develop in unexpected ways, and some mighty fine eye-popping moments. Just how will readers manage to wait for Light? Reviewer: Stacey Hayman

Meet the Author

Michael Grant

Michael Grant has spent much of his life on the move. Raised in a military family, he attended ten schools in five states, as well as three schools in France. Even as an adult he kept moving, and in fact he became a writer in part because it was one of the few jobs that wouldn't tie him down. His fondest dream is to spend a year circumnavigating the globe and visiting every continent. Yes, even Antarctica. He lives in California with his wife, Katherine Applegate, and their two children.

    Great Anticipation

This book is bound for greatness. As soon as I finished PLAQUE, I couldn't wait for FEAR to come out! Michael Grant has such a gift to write such a series; he makes each book so that you can hardely wait to read the next. I really hope the time flies quickly because I don't think I can wait any longer!

    IM ADDICTATED!!!!

Nobody will read these reviews if they've read the first 4--they'll just buy it!!!!! I cant believe that the final book, Lights, isnt coming out until 2013!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too bad I wont be able to read it because the world will have already ended by then...:( hahaha just kidding, but anyways this book was the best of the rest of the series so far. Fear kept me up all night reading--something a good book should always do! The plot line is grabbing and with everyone scattered around the FAYZ I feel as helpless as a character in the book. This book makes me laugh, smile, grimace, and best of all--KEEP READING IT AND WANT MORE!!! Lana, Sannjit, Quinn, Astrid, Sam, Edilio, Brianna, Dekka, Orc, Jack, Diana, Caine, all are great, well thought out, detailed characters that make you see and understand their thinking in this great novel. I dont know why everyone is complaining about gore--and yes I admit it has it and creeps me out a bit--every great book needs some to keep you under its SPELL!!! OVERALL--MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE BOOKS!!! :) THANKS MIKE GRANT FOR THIS!!

If you're a fan of action, romance, and science fiction, this series is for you. I started to read the Gone Series a year ago, and I have finished Fear this summer. (It didn't take me this long to read these books, it's just that they were always out at the library.) All of these books were really good, I and I would propbably reccommend them to a teen or an adult. (These are NOT books for kids!) This just my honest opinion, I'm not some crazed fan. Although, if there was a movie I might be. Wink wink, hint hint! MIchael Grant has a very good writing style, he compells the reader to finish the book, even if that means staying up until two or three in the morning, which I have done on countless occasions. Although it does get a little too much into the details in this book. I really like the monsters though, and Michael Grant does a great job explaining them so you can imagine what they look like. Anyways, if you're looking for a book series with monsters, tragidies, survival of the fittest, death, horror, disease, pain, confusion, starvation, (I know this sounds bad, but wait) friendships, love, unanswered questions, no adults, and finally in April 2013 - Light! You HAVE to read this series!
