Overview

With the release of her coming-of-age opus FEAR OF FLYING, Mya hopes to capitalize on the "Ghetto Supastar" caché she earned by singing on the Grammy-nominated hit from the BULWORTH soundtrack. On her sophomore album, Mya addresses many of the issues facing young women with a winning combination of confessional love songs such as "For the First Time" and girl anthems such as "Takin' Me Over," which features a spirited guest rap by TLC's Left Eye. On the album's up-tempo lead single, "The Best of Me" (featuring Jadakiss of the Lox) -- a modest tale of a young woman's refusal to be swept away by her passion -- Mya's self-assured vocals glide softly and sweetly over a danceable, Swizz Beatz-provided track. Sexually speaking, Mya, like the younger Janet Jackson, is willing to wait a while to get her kicks. But this songbird knows how to let loose -- as she does alongside Beenie Man on the reggae-tinged "Lie Detector," produced by Wyclef. Whether Mya's shaking her groove thing or crying her eyes out, FEAR OF FLYING serves as a sneak peak into the diary of the dream girl next door -- all grown-up.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jon Azpiri
With her follow-up to her commercially successful debut album, Mya has taken a small step towards shedding her squeaky-clean image and embracing a more mature sound. Many of the best moments on Fear of Flying come with the help of other artists such as Jadakiss of the Lox and Left-Eye from TLC. With producer Swizz Beatz behind the soundboard for her and rapper Jadakiss making his presence felt on "Best of Me," the single is the album's highlight. "Takin' Me Over" featuring Left-Eye shows that when pushed Mya can hold her weight among R&B heavyweights. Without the energy of collaborators in the mix, many of her solo tracks wander into predictability. The album relies too heavily on tepid ballads such as the title track and "Man of My Life." Yet songs like "Can't Believe," "For the First Time," and "Lie Detector" show an emotional depth that lacked in her debut. Mya's sophomore effort proves that she is a promising young talent, but still has yet to develop the chops necessary to rank among the best of R&B divas.
