While represented as a companion to Funke's earlier fantasy, Reckless, this book is much more a sequel to the earlier Fearless. For readers who attempt to read this as a stand-alone, there is a sense of catching up to plot and characters that have clearly established their lives in the earlier book. Nonetheless, Funke does her usual masterful job of creating a fantasy world as darkly intriguing and captivating as any that were created by Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm. The comparison is relevant because Funke is not writing pink cloud stories, here. Her tale of the adventurous treasure hunter and portal hopper, Jacob Fearless, is woven with classic fairy tale motifs. Jacob, in an effort to save his brother's life, has been cursed with a moth embedded in his chest that is progressively destroying his heart, and now he must use his treasure hunting skills to break his own spell. A trio of found objects is needed to break the curse by leading Jacob to a crossbow with the power to kill or cure. However, a competing treasure hunter is also searching for this weapon and the two race to find the artifact. Meanwhile, Jacob's paramour, Fox, a vixen-like shape-shifter, is kidnapped by a blue beard creating a "damsel in distress" scenario. The series will be an easy sell to fans of TV's Once Upon a Time because many of the themes are similar: the portal from a contemporary world to the fantasy world and the intrinsic vileness of many of the characters. Fox and Jacob are a magical pair, and this tale of curses and reverses will captivate lovers of the retold fairy tale genre. To save his brother's life, Jacob cut a deal with the Red Fairy, who cursed him by embedding a deadly moth in his chest, designed to destroy him within the year. Since then, Jacob has exhausted every remedy in Mirrorworld, including the All-Healing Apple, the Well of Eternal Youth and a northern Djinn's blood. As the reality of his impending death sinks in, Jacob remembers Guismond the Witch Slayer's crossbow, which, if shot into the heart, can kill many or heal one. With Fox, his devoted, shape-shifting female companion, Jacob embarks on what could be his final hunt through Mirrorworld, with Nerron, a ruthless Goyl treasure hunter in pursuit. As he tries to outmaneuver Nerron and outwit death, introspective Jacob gradually realizes he fears losing Fox more than his life, adding a poignant love note to the overall tone of despair. Gr 7–10—After saving his younger brother Will's life in Reckless (Little, Brown, 2010), Jacob Reckless now has to save his own. With only months to live after being cursed, he searches for the Witch Slayer's crossbow, rumored to give life instead of death when it's used out of love. He is competing for the crossbow against ruthless fellow treasure hunter Nerron; a stone onyx, Goyl, who's saddled with a spoiled prince; and other unwelcome companions on his quest. A map helps readers track Jacob and Fox, the lovely shape-shifting human/vixen who loves him, as they desperately search all around Mirrorworld while encountering such familiar fairy-tale characters as Bluebeard. The action lags a bit when it's interrupted by descriptions of this fantasy world's unique inhabitants and history, but it reads quickly because of its many short chapters. Jacob's and Fox's personalities remain a bit flat because the plot takes precedence, although more is revealed about Fox's background than in the previous book. Jacob's continued inability to express his love for her lends poignancy to their close relationship, which is in danger of being cut short. Recognizable fairy-tale lore such as poisoning by the "Snow White method" and intriguing characters like mysterious Norebo Earlking will keep readers waiting for the next book in the series. Meet the Author

Cornelia Funke
Cornelia Funke is a multiple award-winning German author, best known for writing the Inkworld trilogy as well as The Thief Lord. The Inkworld books, which have won the 2003 Mildred L. Batchelder Award as well as the 2004 and 2006 BookSense Book of the Year Children's Literature Awards, have gained incredible attention and Funke has been dubbed the "German J.K. Rowling." She currently lives in Los Angeles, California.

Biography

One of the most successful children's authors of our day, multi-award-winner Cornelia Funke started out as a social worker focused on the needs of disadvantaged youngsters. She enrolled in a post-graduate course at the Hamburg State College of Design, and left social work in the mid-1980s to begin a career as a children's book illustrator. However, the books she was commissioned to work on were prosaic and unimaginative, and she soon decided to try her hand at writing stories of her own.

An ardent fan of such childhood classics as Tolkien's Ring Trilogy and the tales of C. S. Lewis and J. M. Barrie, Funke was naturally drawn to the world of fantasy. She explained her attraction in a 2006 interview with the genre blog Writer Unboxed: " [T]he wonderful thing about fantasy is that it is the oldest way of story telling -- to clad what we feel and fear into disguises and make them more clear, to pass the borders of our every day life and use our imagination for travels into unknown worlds and unlimited experiences."

Although Funke was an immediate success in her native Germany, she was largely unknown outside Europe -- that is, until a young bilingual fan wrote to a British publishing firm inquiring why her favorite author's books were not available in English. The publisher hunted down what was, at the time, Funke's most recent book (The Thief Lord) and, in 2002, published it in translation. Already the recipient of several literary honors in Europe, the engaging YA fantasy went on to win the 2002 Book Sense Book of the Year Award.

One by one, as they are translated into English and published in America, Funke's wonderful stories have become huge bestsellers. Her ingenuity, imagination, and artistry shine in stand-alone novels like Dragon Rider and the Inkworld Trilogy -- Inkheart (2003), Inkspell (2005), and Inkdeath (2008). She has also produced picture books for younger readers, including The Wildest Brother, Pirate Girl, and Princess Knight. Fans who worry that this natural-born storyteller will run out of ideas can take solace in an author interview conducted in 2008 by Britain's Daily Telegraph. Asked if she had many more books in mind, Funke replied, "Oh yes, I am quite sure I won't be able to write them all down in a lifetime."

      Great book!

      Cornelia Funke has written an amazing sequel to RECKLESS. It is well written and intriging. If you've never read RECKLESS or Fearless then you should.

      This is the second book in the Mirrorworld series and the stakes are higher than ever. Jacob Reckless has saved his brother from the harsh life as the Jade Goyl, but at a terrible cost, his life for his brother's. The Dark Fairy has released a black moth that has settled in Jacob's chest and little by little steals Jacob's life force. He is in a race against time to find the cure from the Dark Fairy's curse. As Jacob and his ever present companion Fox search for the only magical item he hasn't tried to lift the curse, the Crossbow, purported to lift a fairy curse with a bolt through his heart, he finds himself in stiff competition with  another treasure hunter, Nerron, the "Bastard" Goyl.
      The story is full of anguish, fear, heartache and love as Jacob and Fox realize how important they are to each other. Their feelings and undying support propel the story forward through one crisis after another. The magical world that Ms. Funke has created is inventive and exciting. There are so many twists and turns in the story that you'll be holding your breath to see if Jacob can find the crossbow before the Dark Fairy curse finally kills him. There is a cliff hanger at the end and I'll be eagerly awaiting the next volume to find out what happens to Jacob and Fox.
