Library Journal
Though veteran knitting instructor Seiffert's first book is intended as a confidence-builder for beginners, most experienced knitters will find something new here. She takes some of the most intimidating aspects of learning to knit, such as understanding gauge and deciphering pattern instructions, and breaks them down in a manner that is practical and simple to understand. The lessons and techniques are reinforced through swatch projects, which are small enough to be portable and quick to finish yet complex enough to teach new skills.

Improves knitting skills with excellent illustrations, clear instructions, and usable, attractive samples.

Jennifer Seiffert leads you through the basics of knit and purl, shaping, cables, and lace knitting with excellent descriptions and tips. All samplers are 8 inches square and most are worked in worsted weight yarn. The differences between yarn weights is covered in shaping and lace samples. There is also a hat for learning circular knitting with matching scarf as an option. Several projects for using the completed samples are provided.

I particularly liked the emphasis on "reading" your stitches and identifing and correcting mistakes. The illustrations for reading and correcting stitches were excellent. I have been knitting for some time, but I still found very helpful information and learned new techniques. There are several very nice "extra credit" squares that I am going to enjoy knitting. This will be a useful reference even after I have completed all the lessons.
