VOYA
When Karsh's sister Feather is taken by the vicious nomadic Blen tribe, he is consumed with the idea of saving her. His peace-loving people, the Hobans, must think of the safety of the group and make the decision to remain hidden. Karsh is devastated and plans to make his way on his own eventually to find her. Feather, on the other hand, must quickly learn to survive in the hostile environment that the Blens have created. Luckily she is skilled in fetching-gluing and tying feathers into place to assist in straight shooting. This gives her a bit of respect in her new tribe. Knowing that she cannot trust anyone, Feather nonetheless hesitatingly accepts help from a young man who does not seem to share the bloodthirsty nature of the group. When this nomadic tribe makes its way back to the valley of the Hobans, Feather knows that she must escape and warn her people. There are no surprises here when, after a skirmish, the Blen's are soundly defeated, Karsh and Feather are reunited, and those Blens who helped Feather through her plight are welcomed into the Hoban fold. Readers expecting a strong Christian message from this author and publisher will not find it here. There are no flaws or jarring annoyances in this simple, easy-to-read book, making it an excellent extra purchase for any library with a following of post-apocalyptic books like Lois Lowry's Gathering Blue (Houghton Mifflin, 2000/VOYA October 2000) or W. Rodman Philbrick's The Last Book in the Universe (Blue Sky Press/Scholastic, 2000/VOYA December 2000).
Children's Literature
When out picking berries with her brother, Karsh, Feather is taken prisoner by the vicious nomadic tribe called the Blens. Karsh remains hidden and goes back to tell the Wobans, the little village that adopted them, what has happened to his sister. To protect themselves, the Wobans cannot try and get Feather back, but Karsh doesn't give up hope that he will find his sister again. Meanwhile, Feather has made friends with another captive of the Blens, a boy named Tag. Tag helps Feather and teaches her the ways of the Blens so that she can survive. Feather never gives up hope that she will be back with the Wobans, and refuses to become as cruel as the Blens. Will Feather and Karsh be reunited? Can the Wobans protect their valley from the Blens? This imaginative novel explores what happens to the people left after the fall of a king and the descent into lawlessness. The example of the Wobans shows how societies can respect each other and be generous even in the harshest conditions. A wonderful tale for any age, children beginning to explore more complex books and looking for engaging stories will especially be drawn to Feather's story.

    An incredible fantasy adventure.

Susan Page Davis has written an incredible fantasy adventure in Feather. Complete with a map in the front, readers will become enthralled with Davis' characters and tribes.

Feather and her brother, Karsh, are supposed to be picking berries for the village, but Karsh goes down into the cellar of the old outpost to look for treasures. As Feather begs him to come back up, she is kidnapped by Blens, a wandering tribe that raids villages, killing and stealing to get what they need.

When Karsh comes out of the cellar, he is horrified to see the Blens carrying Feather away. He runs back to his village, but the elders decide that going after Feather now would only make the Blens aware of their village. How many of their people should die to save one? Karsh understands, but cannot let Feather go. He vows to find her someday.

Feather learns how to survive as a slave to the Blens despite their brutal nature. Thankfully, a boy named Tag is kind to her and becomes a friend. Feather makes known her gift of fletching, adding feathers to arrows. If she can be useful to the Blens, perhaps they will not risk her life with beatings. While Feather travels with the Blens, she and Tag make plans to escape, waiting for the right moment when broken things are mended and lost things are found.

Feather is an exciting story of learning to survive despite strenuous obstacles. This novel might be recommended for readers ages 9-12, but readers of all ages will enjoy it. I loved this story and wish there was a sequel. (Hint, hint, Ms. Davis?)

    Highly Recommended.
