Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Patrice Russo Belotte
For first-graders Bradley and Brian Pinto, Valentine's Day is all about cupcakes, candies, and sweetheart surprises. Excited about their classroom party, the twin boys can hardly wait to open Valentine cards with all of their friends. As cards are being shared by classmates, one turns up with an odd direction, rather than a student's name. The first-graders anxiously crowd around as their teacher opens up the classroom closet door, to reveal a scared little rabbit huddled in a corner of its cage. Excited and worried for the new pet, the students and children quickly begin to consider who might have left this shocking classroom Valentine's Day surprise. Bradley and Brian are joined by their friends in this book from the "Calendar Mysteries" series, the four children race through town to solve the mystery of the Valentine's Day classroom surprise. Guided by their older siblings of the "A to Z Mysteries" series, the four friends follow clues and enlist the help of Mrs. Pinto to find the rabbit's original owner. As each clue leads the foursome to a new destination, the plot thickens and becomes stranger. Each young detective has a prediction about where the rabbit came from, but none of them seem to make sense until they start asking around for help. When their interviews take them toward a likely subject, it all suddenly begins to make sense. In the end, it is Bradley who not only helps his class solve this mystery, but helps the rabbit's owner, as well. Reviewer: Patrice Russo Belotte
