Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
In the second book of this series, Cal is conveniently rescued from drowning in the vat of oil where he had been left on January 31st. Winter Frey, a ward of Sligo, a notorious criminal has turned off the oil gush and opened the hatch. Winter appears throughout this month's episodes and although she sometimes aids Cal in his search for answers to his father's riddles, Cal cannot be sure where Winter's loyalties lie. Cal's true and abiding help continues to come from his best friend Boges, a competent computer expert and resourceful young man. He brings Cal food and money thus providing his means for survival. Cal moves into an abandoned house and later into a drainpipe. He changes his appearance by cutting his hair and wearing temporary tattoos. Missing quite a few meals has caused him to lose weight which helps him blend in with other homeless people in run down areas of town. Written in journal format, each entry begins with a location, a date and a time. The Australian setting with heat in February will feel familiar to readers who have already read the January book. Cal is left with his foot caught in a rail track with a train approaching as February ends. Ten sequels follow, taking Cal through this terrifying year. Teen readers will likely overlook the absurdity of the unrealistic aspects of the plot and enjoy the fast-paced action.
