Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
One small, powerless but stubborn Mexican family is pitted against the agro-industrial juggernaut Blackwell and all of its enablers in Mexico in this passionate, political graphic novel. While Diego Busqueda seeks relief in America from the deprivations inflicted on his Mexican hometown by the rapacious Blackwell, his family struggles to withstand poverty and harassment from local authority figures. When oppression erupts into violent conflict, Diego’s family is forced to flee. Unfortunately for the Busquedas, young daughter Flaca already carries within her the seeds of a terrible transformation, the legacy of Blackwell’s true purpose. Often gory and eschewing an easy happy ending, Lang and Lapinski have created an allegory for the sometimes predatory relationship American companies have with Mexico. While Diego and the rest of his family are portrayed sympathetically, even when committing terrible acts in their desperation, the corporate antagonists are motivated by simple greed and unbound lust for power; no plea of necessity excuses their actions. Lapinski’s art does a fine job capturing the emotions of the story without getting melodramatic. (Sept.)
Library Journal
The Mexicans following Diego toward the border want a better life—but not one with fangs and fur. Set in the real-life Wild West of undocumented immigration, Feeding Ground pits good-guy "coyote" Diego and his clueless charges against the hellishly sun-baked trail north, troops from the U.S. Border Guard, "minute men" border vigilantes, and werewolves from the unscrupulous experiments of Blackwell Industries. Not a trendy fillip pasted on to add fang appeal to the story, these werewolves embody Mexican folklore about the deadly horror of the desert as well as a higher sort of corruption endemic to the world of pollos (immigrants), coyotes (smugglers of pollos), and la migra (the Border Patrol). And these ugly-mug killer wolves can even be your own relatives, as Diego's family sadly learns, leaving the Southwest a little closer to chaos at the not-happy end. VERDICT A fine example of an issue-based family drama infused with supernatural immediacy, this will appeal to horror fans and those interested in comics about current political dilemmas, older teens and up owing to dismemberments and occasional sexual themes. Lapinski's realistic art uses color sparingly to good effect.—M.C.
