WIFE WANTED --Love not required or even desired. Or so Chicago cop Jimmy Corona thought when he returned to his Oklahoma hometown and ran smack into Kara Brand. All Jimmy wanted was to find a mother for his son, someone to keep little Tyler safe while he took down his latest perp.

Instead, he found that the shy, awkward Kara he'd known from high school had blossomed into a genuine beauty with a big heart and courage to spare --qualities he learned to value when danger followed him to town and only Kara stood between his son and certain death. Suddenly love didn't seem like such a scary prospect after all.

Meet the Author

Maggie Shayne began her writing career in kindergarten, when she painstakingly copied The Brementown Musicians onto construction paper in full Crayola color, complete with illustrations of her own design, and presented it proudly to her teacher. Of course this was not an exact copy. She had tweaked the story a bit, improving it greatly, in her five-year-old opinion.

By third grade her tastes had matured. At story hour, when it was her turn to choose the book from which the teacher would read, Maggie picked Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart, which she proceeded to recite from memory as the teacher began reading. Far from being suitably impressed, Maggie recalls her teacher seemed to pale a bit, and looked at her oddly from then on.

Her fondness for the macabre stayed with her, as did her penchant for rewriting her favorite stories. As a teen, while watching her beloved Universal Pictures Monster Classics over and over, she became more and more certain someone had to fix the endings.
It was so obvious that Dracula, the Wolfman, and the dusty Mummy had been cheated! These were not horror flicks, in her teenage opinion. They were romances. They portrayed a love that went beyond life itself. But the endings were all wrong. Anyone could see the monster was supposed to get the girl!

Well, one marriage and five daughters later, Maggie has made it her mission in life to see to it that old wrongs are set right. Her stories range from down-home Westerns (Texas Brand miniseries, Silhouette Books) to glitz (Million Dollar Marriage, 8/99) to modern-day fairy tales (her Avon contemporary titles). But her best love is the genre known as paranormal romance. And Maggie writes theselike no other author. No one else writing today manages to combine the hearts of two such diverse genres as romance and horror, while still thrilling both segments of the readership with the stunning results.

Shamelessly romantic, breathtakingly emotional, chilling in their suspense, with edge-of-the-seat tension, her stories capture the classic allure that makes beauty-and-the-beast tales so beloved -- the key is the redemption of the monster by the transformative power of love.

    Just plain bad.

Jimmy Corona¿s ex wife is a drug addict, who signed away custody of their son when he was a month old, after she injured his legs when she fell down the stairs with him. Jimmy has decided Tyler needs a mother so he cold bloodedly sets out to find a wife. His plan is a loveless, sexless marriage which will end in a divorce when Tyler reaches 18. He doesn¿t intend to let the woman in on his plans until after they are married. He returns to his hometown and runs into Kara Brand who has turned into a beautiful woman that his son Tyler immediately adores. When he finds out Kara has loved him since high school he figures he won¿t have any trouble trapping her by pretending to love her, using Tyler as the final bait. Jimmy is a conscientless user. If he loves his son so much why would he give him the example that marriage means nothing with one-sided love and based on lies. Jimmy is going to stand up in front of God and say vows he has no intention of keeping. ¿Love (doesn¿t figure into the picture for him), honor (what he¿s doing is very dishonorable), cherish (he doesn¿t care), faithful only to each other (I can¿t imagine a 30 year old man going without sex for 15 years so he will cheat) till death do us part (or until Tyler is grown, whichever comes first)¿ And Kara, though she knows something is not right, has so little pride and is such a naive, wimpy girl (girl fits because she¿s childish) that she lets Jimmy use her. Frankly they were both disgusting! Oh and the sex scenes which Maggie Shayne can really write? There weren¿t any. Also as others pointed out the cover is not at all representative of the story. If you are reading the whole Oklahoma and Texas Brand series you might want to read this one. Otherwise give it a wide berth.
