Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Adair fails to convince with her second Destiny Bay contemporary (after Last Kiss of Summer), set in tiny Destiny Bay, Wash., which can’t decide whether its central couple are friends becoming lovers or have always been meant for each other. Ali Marshal, an artist working with salvaged metal, is on the cusp of her big break, with a piece featured in Architectural Digest, when her social-climbing, limelight-stealing sister Bridget comes back home and announces her engagement to a wealthy Seattle developer. Ali sets out to comfort Bridget’s ex-husband, former pro hockey player Bradley Hawk, and they impulsively start a fake romance. But both Ali and Hawk, whose career-ending injury also ended his marriage, quickly start to feel like the romance might be real. Readers will struggle to believe in the speed with which Ali’s family, including Bridget, and the gossipy townspeople come to accept and cheer on the ex-sibling-in-law couple. Adair is better at capturing the competing demands on Ali (of career, childhood divorce issues, and caring for her diabetic father) than she is at making Ali and Bradley’s confession of long-held crushes match their earlier behavior. Ali devotes her life to making others happy. She's selfless, mothering, fierce, loyal, and strong. When she was young, her parents divorced and split the kids between them. Ali may not have had a motherly influence, but her dad surrounded her with love. He supported her and her dreams, while teaching her to be a strong independent woman. Her mom taught Bridget, Ali's older sister, to be a selfish, insecure person with no goals. So Ali and Bridget often clashed, especially when Bridget married Ali's longtime crush--Hawk. Hawk has spent the last two years recovering from a failed marriage to Bridget and forced early retirement from NHL due to an injury. The only thing he asked for when they divorced was for her to NOT live in Destiny Bay. He wanted to come home and start a new life for himself. Hawk and his best friend own a successful bar in Destiny Bay. Hawk's friendship with Ali has grown and he's finally at a place in his life where he feels he can move on....until Bridget breezes back into town. In a desperate attempt to "have Hawk's back", Ali tells her family that Hawk is her boyfriend. Bridget is newly engaged, but seems unhappy. Ali knows Bridget is up to something, but doesn't know what it is. So Hawk and Ali agree to be faux-friends, then sexy-friends. When Bridget makes a play for Hawk, Ali doubts Hawk's love for her causing all sorts of problems. I really enjoyed this novel. I loved how supportive Hawk was of Ali and her dreams. I loved how he "listened" to her and loved her for who she was. I loved that he pampered her without suffocating her. I especially loved it when he called her his sunshine!!! While Ali was strong in nearly EVERY aspect of her life, I was a little disappointed in her willingness to allow her sister to walk all over her in the name of "family". She was the only one who made concessions so that Bridget was happy. What about her dreams? She even let her sister turn her congratulatory party into Bridget's engagement party!!! I wanted Ali to have it out with her sister and call her out on her selfishness! Other than that, I truly enjoyed this novel. It was engaging, funny, sweet, and ended with a HEA. I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.

Loved this story! From the first scene of Ali and Hawk together, I was hooked! I was on pins and needles waiting to make sure they wound up together. Great characters, a sensitive combination of family and love. Such a great couple! Aliana Marshal has been crushing on Bradley Hawk since she was a kid. She met him and was immediately smitten, and they were good friends ... and then the worst thing imaginable happened! He met her sister Bridget and fell under her spell instantly. Ali had to stand by and watch the man of her dreams marry her sister ... her selfish and demanding sister ... her wishy-washy sister ... the sister that up and leaves him just as his hockey career in the NHL is ending. Hawk was crushed when Bridget wanted out of their marriage. He was in it for the long haul ... and continued to let her string him along for a time or two even after it was over. Now he's happy living back home in Destiny Bay, running his bar and brewing his hard cider with his best friend Luke ... and best of all, having his buddy Ali working and living right next door. When Bridget shows back up in town with news of an upcoming wedding, Ali struggles with how it's all going to affect Hawk. She knows he's still hung up on Bridget, so she needs to protect him. When a make-believe relationship between the two of them comes out of her mouth, they're all shocked. And when the heat that comes off of them during a couple of "fake" kisses hits her, she's blown away ... and so is Hawk ... and all of a sudden he wants them to be dating ... and not for pretend anymore!

I have previously read Marina Adair books and enjoyed them thoroughly! This was not a bad book, it was me that had issues with the storyline. The younger sister winding up in a relationship with her sister's ex-husband bothered me. I think that was why it took me so long to read it. I started this book two weeks ago and found myself not picking up my tablet to read it. I will say the characters were well developed! There were some definite moments of humor throughout the story. I will read more Marina Adair books I am sure!

Sexy and fun second book in the Destiny Bay series! Hawk and Ali perfect for each other, even if Hawk was married to her older sister. My heart broke for Ali and they way she always put everyone else's needs before her own. Hawk did a perfect job of showing her she deserved her own dreams. Lots of drama from Ali's family, but a great happy ending. 4.5 stars I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. I was not compensated for this review, all conclusions are my own.

This is another 5-Star read for this fabulous author! This is book 2 in the Destiny Bay series and it features Bradley Hawk and Ali Marshal. These two are fantastic together! As long time friends they are hilarious. As more than friends they are magical. The story is funny, witty, sexy and is filled with so much love, it makes you envious. The love of a father for his daughters and the love of a man for a woman. For their own issues, their story is deep and painful but also beautiful. I am loving the series. At the end of each book I am sad to leave Destiny Bay until the next time.

When Hawk's professional hockey career ended in injury, his marriage wasn't far behind. After moving home to Destiny Bay and building a new life, opening a sports bar and starting up a hard cider company with his best friend. When Hawk married her sister, Ali kissed her fantasies goodbye, and lost one of her best friends at the same time. She's focused on building an amazing career, but her social life leaves a lot to be desired, and most of the men she's dated have left her feeling flat. A surprise appearance of her sister at Ali's dad's - with a new fiance' in tow, spurs Ali to make a rash decision to pretend that she and Hawk are an item, and when her sister decides to hang out in town, the two of them are forced to either carry on the charade or fess up. As they start to spend more time together, the close friendship they shared when they were young is easily rekindled, and the attraction between them grows, but there is plenty of family drama built into their blossoming relationship before it even gets off the ground. Can they find a way to make everything work, with the tangled family history between them? Feels Like the First Time is a beautiful story about family, friendship, love, and support. Marina Adair is a must read author for me, and this is a shining example of the romance that she crafts so beautifully.

I am a huge fan of Marina Adair !! I really enjoyed this not so typical second chance romance. Hawk & Ali certainly have a very interesting past, namely his ex-wife is her sister and they have known each other for many years. He has had a very difficult time getting over Bridget. Having to retire from hockey basically ended the two major things in his life, his career and his marriage. Now living back home in Destiny Bay he is neighbors with Ali and they are friends and he is also still close with her dad. Ali has never been his type though or so he thought. I am very happy Hawk gets a second chance at love with Ali. They have incredible chemistry. Neither of them expected for what happened between them to happen but it is clearly right for them to be together. Of course it is not an easy path to go down given the circumstances in their lives and they definitely face some challenges, but love true love prevails. He says some seriously swoon-worthy things to her that would be impossible for anyone to resist. I enjoyed this love story very much as it is more than just the love of these two people but of family too. I look forward to more from Destiny Bay and Marina Adair.

Bradley Hawk thought he had found the kind of love that lasts forever, but his happily ever after came to a screeching halt when his wife decided that their marriage wasn't built to last forever. He suffered an injury on the ice, and his NHL career was suddenly over, and not long after his wife decided that their marriage was over too. So he decided to move home to Destiny Bay, where he could heal in peace, and possibly discover a new path in life... never expecting that new path to lead him to his ex-sister-in-laws door! Ali Marshal fell hard for Bradley Hawk the first time he walked into her life, they became fast friends, and she always hoped it would lead to love... and it did, but with her sister. Watching her sister have the life with Hawk that she had always dreamed of was excruciating, but then her sister did something totally unexpected and walked away from him. Now he is moved back home to Destiny Bay, and they have fell back into their comfortable friendship, and while she is thankful for his friendship she can't help but want more... no matter how wrong it maybe. When her sister comes breezing back into town with life changing news, Ali's instincts kick in and she comes to Hawk's aid, claiming to be his girlfriend. She knows her sister news has the power to crush him, and she isn't about to let that happen again, even if it means lying to her family. But soon the lies start to become the truth, and Ali finds herself getting a little closer to the dream she has had for so many years... As soon as I swiped the last page on "Last Kiss Of Summer" I was left aching for more, I just wanted to spend a little more time with the folks from Destiny Bay, and stay wrapped up in their enchanting little world. So, when I had the opportunity to meet Ali and Hawk, I jumped at the chance, mainly because I knew just what I would be getting myself into... some seriously good reading!! Nobody does romance quite like Ms. Adair, she has a knack for creating story lines that have just the right amounts of sass, heartfelt emotion, sexy-fueled banter, and toe curling romance sure to steam up your screen!! Ali and Hawk were quite the pair, they had me laughing one moment, feeling the emotions and near tears the next, and then soon after blushing with their steamy between the sheets action... their story was AMAZING! Highly recommend you meet these two, their little journey to finding their forever love is sure to score a special place in your heart! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.

Fantastic second book in this series! It's a friends to lovers story with a bit of a twist. Ali and Hawk have known each other a long time. She had a huge crush on him when she was younger but then he started dating and later married her sister Bridget. Everything was going well until an injury ended not only his NHL career but his marriage as well. He's happily back in Destiny Bay, living next door to Ali and trying to put his past behind him and trying hard not to follow through on his attraction to Ali. A fight he's having a hard time with. Ali grew up to be a sexy, fun woman and her devotion to family warms his heart. Then they get caught up in a fake relationship scheme and everything begins to change! Definitely a book for the must read list. I highly recommend it.

Once again, Ms Adair not only entertains us, but gives us a touching story about family, responsibilities, expectations, and love. This is the second story of the author’s Destiny Bay series, and rest assure, it’s a stand alone. This one centers around Hawk , an ex-hockey player, owner of a bar, and ex- brother-in-law, and good friend of Ali. Ali, is a metal sculpture who has always loved Hawk from afar and considers him a good friend. She is an independent gal, but also one that loves her dysfunctional family to the point that at times , they take advantage of her. She gives her all to everyone, but if not for Hawk’s friendship, no one would be taking her feelings into consideration. The story reminds us that our childhood , does in fact affect how we feel and act as adults. That when a parent is self-centered, and child-like, the child feels he/she needs to be the adult, and that childhood is forgotten. It’s a story that will touch your heart, and will make you fall in love with Ali and Hawk. I love a quote from the book “…you are the funny parts, the loud parts, the quiet moments….makes me laugh when I do cry…” Can’t wait for the next book in this series. I was gifted this copy by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Feels Like The First Time makes for a feel good romance with a hint of taboo thrown in for good measure. Marina Adair has a knack for writing poignant stories that can easily make a readers eyes water with laughter and/or tears. What began as a matter of prideful insecurity turns into a mouthwatering love affair. Ali and Hawk appeal to sentimental card carrying romantics everywhere. With each and every word, Ms. Adair touches the heart while resurrecting the dreamer in us all.
