Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-- Felicity is a nine-year-old living in Williamsburg in 1774. The first book concerns lessons in gentlewomanly comportment; although she initially expresses a desire to learn Latin, Greek, philosophy, and geography, one look at Mrs. Manderly's tea service is enough to win her over completely to lessons in the social graces. Her enjoyment runs up against her father's decision not to sell tea in his shop until the hated tax is repealed. Felicity's Surprise revolves around the creation of a new gown to wear to the governor's palace two weeks after Christmas. Whether or not to attend is the first battle of conscience, as Felicity's father's business has suffered since he sided with those opposed to the king's tax. Her mother's illness, however, temporarily drives away all thoughts of the party. A ``Peek into the Past'' section concludes each volume. The characterizations are superficial and the background information and historical detail frequently overwhelm all else. The illustrations are colorful, but figures are awkwardly depicted. Purchase where the series is popular; those who didn't buy early volumes may safely skip these undistinguished offerings as well. --Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Library, Randolph

    more from this reviewer

    Great series for young girls!

"... This update is over the first six books about Felicity Merriman, a spunky young redhead in colonial America, in the dawn of the Revolutionary War. All six books were written by Valerie Tripp. Felicity lives in Virginia with her mother, father, and her little brother and sister. Her father is a shopkeeper, and his young apprentice lives with them as well - he is older than Felicity, but they become good friends. Felicity also befriends a girl her age whose family of Loyalists comes over from England. Felicity's family are Patriots, and this difference does cause some tension between the girls at one point. ..."

Still love it after 15 years

I first read Felicity's Surprise when I was 9 years old and was given the Felicity doll for my birthday by my parents (after I begged and pleaded for months). 15 years later, I still love re-reading this book every Christmas. It gives a beautiful and inspirational message of hope and love for girls of all ages. It also provides excellent historical facts concerning Colonial times. Felicity is an admirable heroine, one who has spirit and pluck, but also intelligence and courage during difficult times. This book is a wonderful addition to any girl's library.
