Rare is the presiding adult who will be able to resist singing along to this invigorating picture-book adaptation of Feliciano's bilingual pop-music carol. After an introduction highlighting the Puerto Rican Christmas tradition of the parranda (in which neighbors and friends carol and party from house to house), Feliciano's brief lyrics ("Feliz Navidad/ I want to Wish You a Merry Christmas/... From the bottom of my heart") come to life via Diaz's (Smoky Night) bold folk-art-inspired paintings. The first half of the book (in Spanish) shows parranderos in Puerto Rico; a middle wordless spread offers a quiltlike presentation of traditional symbols of the season (poinsettia, snowman, mistletoe, etc.); and the balance of pages (accompanying the English lyrics) depict merry-makers in a wintry setting. While calling each group of spreads a "story" implies more plot than actually emerges here, Diaz's compositions convey the joyous mood that holidays traditionally inspire in people, no matter where they live. Criticas
PreS-Gr 2-Based on the simple and repetitive lyrics to Feliciano's beloved Christmas song, this book is low on text but features supercharged illustrations. The bold graphic design has an almost kaleidoscopic effect. Diaz uses multiple images per page in striking, dark-hued pastels with bold, black accents. The song lyrics splash across the text in joyous banners the images depict a festive holiday gathering in scenes of people, food, gifts, and all the accoutrements of the season. An unattributed introduction discusses the Puerto Rican tradition of the parranda in which carolers go from house to house singing holiday songs and receiving food and drink in return. A beautiful gift selection, this book will fly off the shelves during the Christmas shopping season. Excellent for use in public libraries during story time, especially when combined with a round of singing. Maria Otero-Boisvert, "Criticas" Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
The text consists of just a few lines, the lyrics to Feliciano's Christmas song. The book begins with details of the traditional Christmas celebration in Puerto Rico, along with notes on the universality of the spirit of Christmas. Diaz fills the end pages and the interior double pages with many symbols associated with the holiday: musical instruments, games, food, gifts, singing, and more. In typical Diaz style, the stylized illustrations are produced with thick painted black outlines and intense colors. The last stunning layout depicts a white dove against a blood-red background. The few words are hand-calligraphed in black, becoming part of the overall page design. Be sure to note the different jacket and cover, all part of this message about the joys of the holiday. 2003, Cartwheel Books/Scholastic,

K-Gr 4-Like an oversized, multipaged, bilingual Christmas card, this gorgeous production's minimal text consists of the lyrics to Feliciano's famous song and emphatically wishes readers both Feliz Navidad and a Merry Christmas. Beautifully designed pages feature Diaz's characteristic stylized paintings and song lyrics in large, faux hand-lettered font. The pictures make reference to and contrast many Christmas traditions and symbols, and show that all cultures emphasize families and friends celebrating together. Two introductory pages introduce the parranda as a long-standing tradition in Puerto Rico and (somewhat gratuitously) a paragraph explains that "Christmas crosses all cultural boundaries." The subtitle depends on a very close reading of the pictures to decipher the two stories. Musical notation is not included.-S. P. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A brief text describing Puerto Rican and international Christmas customs introduces Feliciano's well-known song, written, "one cold North American Christmas season, when at age twenty-four, he was homesick for his native Puerto Rico." The pictures accompanying the song depict two Christmases. The first half is in Puerto Rico, with palm trees, chiles, and flowers in the background as musicians travel from house to house, singing and playing guitars, drums, maracas, and accordions. In the second half, celebrations are in snowy landscapes, with Santa hats, wrapped gifts, a snowman, and steaming cups of cider. In both "the real miracle of Christmas is in the power of giving and in the wonderful connections people make with each other around his enchanting holiday." Diaz's bold, colorful pages create a celebratory rhythm and invite readers to contemplate the similarities and differences in the two settings." The implied stories and the numerous Christmas symbols provide much to discuss, and may well inspire readers to engage in celebrations of their own. (Picture book. 3-7)
