Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
One of a ten volume series entitled, "Legends of Health and Fitness," this book profiles celebrities whose work in the physical fitness field has drawn attention to its importance—Christie Brinkley, Denise Austin, Claudia Schiffer, and Tyra Banks. It opens with a brief history of women's interest and participation in fitness activities since the 1600s. Not until the 1960s did women actively compete in sports, and today, many women also work out for the health benefits not just because it is trendy. None of the celebrities cited have endorsed the book and the information appears to be drawn from other books about fitness. The profiles describe their early lives and development of careers as well as their varied interests in the arts, education or sports. The author puts a positive spin on each celebrity's future goals, good works, and community involvement and emphasizes her professionalism and willpower to succeed. An index and further reading list are included. Black-and-white photos of the women are included with the text. The book cover pictures many stars, male and female, and pictures of the men stand out. 2001, Mitchell Lane, $24.95. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Elaine Wick
