Overview

Welcome to the world of the fennec fox! Many readers may never have heard of this nocturnal creature. This tiniest member of the dog family is native to northern Africa. A chapter on the fennec fox's body discusses its appearance, size, and special features, such as its huge, sensitive ears, furry feet, and long tail. Other chapters cover its life cycle, diet, and desert habitat, including a map. Predators, including humans, are also introduced, along with threats to the fennec fox's environment and conservation efforts that are in place. Every book in the Nocturnal Animals series includes sidebars on scientific classification, the special features of the nocturnal eye, and the difference between nocturnal, diurnal, and crepuscular animals. Full-color photographs will draw in the reader while showing off the fennec fox's unique characteristics. Glossary words in bold, phonetic spellings, and an index supplement this easy-to-read text. Checkerboard Library is an imprint of ABDO Publishing Company.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sue Poduska
Part of the "Nocturnal Animals" series, this volume is an easy-to-follow introduction to the scientific aspects of this animal. The reader learns about scientific classification without a lecture. Carnivores and omnivores are discussed without getting too graphic. Night vision is introduced in an engaging manner. The reader will probably be particularly interested in the future of the foxes and their habitat. The table of contents and index should be helpful to young researchers. The glossary is very complete, although a little less precise than the text. For example, the text goes into a long explanation of animal classification and discusses the order Cdarnivora, and then the glossary just says rodents are related to one another, when Rodentia is also an order. Under Web sites, the book claims book links on the publisher's site, but the reviewer did not see any links to more information about the animal. The illustrations are instructive and appealing, helping to make it a terrific book for kids. Reviewer: Sue Poduska
