Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
A young boy wanders into the forest despite being warned by his mother about the wild beasts there. He has, however, no idea of what a wild beast is. Discovered by a strolling bear, he tells the bear about his mother's warning. The bear begins to feel wary of these "beasts" himself. As they walk along together, they meet Elephant and warn him. The boy makes the "beasts" sound more terrible. The three are soon creeping through the forest. Readers will begin to smile as the real live beasts join with a crocodile, a wolf, and a python as the boy makes the "beasts" sound ever more threatening. When they hear something approaching, they run for their lives. The boy is left to face his "ferocious wild mom." Of course he tells her he did not see any beasts at all. The animals, whose behavior is obviously not real in this gentle fantasy, are portrayed naturalistically in watercolors, with very human gestures. The forest setting serves as the backdrop, until the double-page spread in which the looming silhouette of mom scares them all, including, perhaps, the reader. She is relieved, but he is still puzzled about the "beasts." Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
