Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Della A. Yannuzzi
Another book in the "Cool Pets!" portion of the "Far-Out and Unusual Pets" series looks at ferrets as pets. These furry and cute critters are curious and mischievous creatures that can offer a dedicated pet owner many happy and funny moments. Ferrets are in the weasel family which also includes minks, otters, skunks, martens, fishers, and wolverines. Unlike their cousins, ferrets are not wild, although at times they may act like they are. One distinguishing feature of these awesome pets is their desire to steal. In fact, the word ferret comes from a Latin word meaning "little thief." They sneak around the house looking for items to hide. Ferrets are energetic and never tire of playing, but they also like to sleep and can do so for up to eighteen hours a day. The authors point out that careful consideration should be given before becoming a ferret pet owner. Ferrets need a "ferret-proof" home because they are known for their escape skills. Living with a ferret can be energizing. They are smart, and can learn commands such as "come," "sit," and "stay." Ferrets can also learn to walk on a leash and be trained to use a litter boxes. Although ferrets need lots of time, attention and patience, caring and responsible owners are rewarded with affection and companionship. Sidebars offer tidbits of information, and backmatter includes words to know, plus lists of books and web sites. Illustrations are in color. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi
