Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Randall L. Peper, DVM, PhD (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This book is divided into five sections that cover ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas, small rodents, and other topics.
Purpose: The editors intend the book to address the common concerns of the practicing veterinarians who work with small pet mammals. This book is to serve as a user-friendly veterinary reference, especially of ferret and rabbit management. These are worthy objectives that the editors have met.
Audience: This book is written for an anticipated audience that includes practicing veterinarians, veterinary students, veterinary technicians and the lay public. The majority of the 29 contributing authors are either clinicians in a private practice or academic faculty.
Features: This book contains an appropriate number of black-and-white illustrations and numerous line drawings throughout the chapters. Large amounts of species-specific data are presented in very useful tabular form, either within the chapters or in the appendices and formulary that follow. Most of the chapters are followed by adequate listings of pertinent references.
Assessment: This book is a welcome addition as a reference for the practicing veterinarian, veterinary student, or veterinary technician on ferret and rabbit management and disease. The chapter covering guinea pigs and chinchillas is less extensive, and the chapter on small rodents is relatively short. Overall, this book contains much valuable information that is easy to locate, read, and understand. It should be a valuable resource for veterinarians in clinical practice who treat ferrets, rabbits, and the occasional "pocket pet."
