From The CriticsReviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: Since 1999, this book has been published yearly to stay current with changes in diagnosis, clinical algorithms, treatment, laboratory tests, etc.
Purpose: It is intended as a clear and concise reference for physicians and allied health professionals.
Audience: "Anyone looking for medical information, from practicing physicians to patients and family members, are the intended audience. There is very little unnecessary text and the book is quite easy to use with a modicum of medical knowledge.
Features: It is organized alphabetically by diagnosis, and each section follows a template providing basic information about the diagnosis, the ICD-9 codes, epidemiology, pathogenesis, and how the diagnosis is made, along with the differential considerations, treatment, complications, and, where appropriate, prevention strategies. There are a limited number of black-and-white photographs, references listed as EBM Evidence, and some suggested readings for further information. The purchase of the book comes with access to an online version that is quite easily negotiated with minimal keystrokes. This is one of the better websites in electronic medical publishing. Additionally, the publisher has extended the electronic mobile media availability to smartphone use through Skyscape software.
Assessment: "This book has the benefit of being updated yearly and, thus, has very up-to-date material. The real value is in the web-based version, as the print version is quite large. In contrast, the Skyscape version is not quite as helpful because of size and format limitations.
