Overview

Could having the occasional small bowl of ice cream lead to a midnight craving for pickles and ice cream?

It's common knowledge that diet and exercise have profound effects on your health. Can they affect your ability to get pregnant, too? Until now, the answer to that question was a qualified "Maybe." Today, it's "Yes!" thanks to exciting findings from a landmark long-term study of female nurses. As described in The Fertility Diet, ten simple changes in diet and activity can have profound effects on fertility. You can increase your chances of getting pregnant with such simple strategies as:

  • Avoiding trans fats
  • Eating more beans, nuts, and other fertility-boosting plant protein
  • Embracing whole grains such as oatmeal and barley
  • Having a glass of whole milk or other full-fat dairy product every day (a small bowl of ice cream every now and then counts, too!)
  • Staying away from sugared sodas

The Nurses' Health Study exhaustively examined the effects of diet and other lifestyle changes on fertility among nearly 20,000 female nurses. It scrutinized everything from alcohol to vitamins. In plain language, two of the study's lead researchers translate its groundbreaking findings into changes you can put into practice today, setting the stage for a healthy pregnancy and forming the foundation for an eating strategy that will serve you well for the rest of your life. The Fertility Diet also offers a week's worth of meal plans and fifteen delicious recipes.

    Pregnancy Success!

I have had ovulation problems and was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries when I was 18. I first found out about this book in a magazine article in mid-November. I purchased the book in mid-December and started putting into practice some of what the book recommends: eating less red meat, eating more beans and fish, eating whole grains, limiting trans fat and eating whole fat dairy. I didn't follow it strictly, but did incorporate what I could. Due to problems with ovulation, my doctor had prescribed me fertility drugs, but we were apprehensive to use them. Once I found about this book, I was eager to try its recommendations because they were things I could naturally control through diet and exercise. I am now seven months pregnant, we were able to get pregnant in early January - less than a month after I read the book! I am so grateful to have found this book and look forward to using its principles in hopes of future pregnancies!

    A reviewer

I am 42 years old. My husband and I had been trying for 8 years. We tried many expensive medical options, and still had no luck! Once I cut back on the red meat, as the book suggested, I began to get my protein from beans and nuts, I am now 8 months along the way! I am looking for names for my baby now! Gosh, i am glowing and so happy! and just over the moon! I am now eating a healthy vegetarian diet and my doctor is happy/impressed with my body and my babies progress.

    I Also Recommend:

    Okay book

As a midwife, I read "the Fertility Diet" and found the information to be helpful. However, the author discourages full-fat dairy after conception and advises switching to skim milk. This is a really bad and wrong advice as a nursing mother needs natural fats to support the growth of her baby's brain. Another book that I found it to be more accurate in its information is the Perfect 10 Diet.

    more from this reviewer

I'm glad I bought this book.

I like that the information in this book is based on scientific studies. It's well written and informative! I liked learning about the science behind their statements, such as why whole dairy is better for you (in limited servings) than reduced-fat dairy, etc.

    Fertility Diet

This book was very easy to read and understand. It provides a depth of knowledge and research into the study and resolution of fertility through diet and behavioral changes.
