Children's Literature - Tiffany Erickson
Every culture has a signature holiday or celebration that it commemorates with special decorations. This title looks at decorations made of paper, food, clay, wood and other materials. Some of the decorations will be familiar to children, like the pinata and gingerbread boy, but other decorations will be all new. Special candles and lanterns are described, as well as some amazing ceremonial headdresses. Readers will learn how to create a Diwali lamp, corn husk doll, headdress, eye of God, and more. These craft instructions are quite simple, however, the pinata looks very advanced and should only be created by the most patient crafters. Many celebrations are addressed, like Day of the Dead, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year, and even some wedding traditions, but little is said about the actual celebration. Some decorations are only attributed to particular tribes or regions, not a specific festival. This is a fine craft book, but it falls short as a multicultural book. Reviewer: Tiffany Erickson
