Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-- Spring has sprung, so two old friends are off to the garden--Festus with carrots, potatoes, peas, and beans to plant and his kinetic cat Mercury with a meatball (``How do you know they won't grow if you haven't tried them?''). Unfortunately, the newly dug garden suddenly becomes, in succession, a hunting ground for the chickens, an attractive wallow for a wandering pig, and a place to hang out for stray cattle. Rousting them out takes some ingenuity, a commodity that Festus and his pal have in abundance. The cartoon illustrations for this madcap tale are littered with small, sly details, from curtains and other homey touches in the hen roost, to scattered, unidentifiable peanut-sized onlookers. Lively, energetic fun. --John Peters, New York Public Library
