Overview

Following in the footsteps of S/M Futures, our previous volume of futuristic sadomasochistic science fiction, Fetish Fantastic presents lush stories which transform underground sexual fetishes such as S/M, bondage and discipline and erotic power exchange into whole new worlds. Written mostly by modern S/M practitioners, the stories represent the leading edge of both sexual fiction and science fiction. In the tightly controlled society of a future Japan, a young woman finds secret erotic release at the hands of a powerful corporate figure; on a world where sexual deviation is condemned, a military man finds himself unable to resist his prisoners; in the fantasy realm of cyberspace a backer can insinuate himself into people's virtual reality SM scenes. Fetish Fantastic will be enjoyed both by readers familiar with the SM scene and those for whom it is completely new. The book will feature cover art by Michael Manning, artist and creator of The Spider Garden.

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The 11 tales in Tan's (Black Feathers: Erotic Dreams) new anthology deal with the eroticism of power exchange--S/M--in futuristic and alternative-reality settings. The best of them fully integrate sex with SF/fantasy and provide erotic heat in satisfactory genre motifs. A futuristic Japanese-flavored culture of rigid societal roles provides the backdrop for Reina Delacroix's submissive/dominant action in "All Things Ripen in Their Own Time." Andrea Horlick's "Training A Priestess" sleeps in the same bed, but its setting is a fantasy temple where acolytes gain spiritual power in exchange for perfect obedience. "Cyber Knight," by Gary Bower, plays in a programmed universe of steamy sexual encounters. M. Christian's stylish "Guernica" is set in a future when kinky sex is a heinous crime and its practitioners risk prison and death to partake in it. Sexuality has been homogenized, licensed and regulated into blandness in "Form," by Pagan O'Leary, wherein it takes an outlaw Master to warm things up. This explicit collection isn't quite the cutting-edge erotics or literature it purports to be, but it's imaginative and a cut above most such offerings. Introduction

If you're reading this book for the sex (and I hope that you are ...) and don't enjoy the form of foreplay known as delayed gratification, then skip this introduction now, and read it at the end while you're lying in your proverbial sweaty sheets (or among your cast-off chains, tangled whips, or what have you).

    Still reading?

When it comes to "fantastic" fetishes, this book reflects a bias towards S/M, and the fetishes that associate around it: spanking, corsetry, corporal punishment, bondage, and other erotic turn-ons of the power exchange variety. You won't find much in here on foot fetishism (though maybe a bit on boots), and nothing on infantilism, Amazon giantesses, or other so-called "vanilla" fetishes. I leave the task of compiling that anthology to someone else—I've stuck with what I know. What I know is leather, boots, whips, dungeons, shackles, masters, slaves, dominas, and servants.

More than that, though, what I know are fantasies. Generally speaking, S/M is not about the objects or roles we fetishize, but the fantasies that imbue them with power. The whip is meaning without the hand that swings it and, perhaps more importantly, the reason it is being swung. Were you a bad slave who needs to be punished? Are you a high-born heroine captured by pirates? Are you a religious acolyte seeking penitence? Or maybe something no one else has ever quite imagined?

These stories are in the "no one else has quite imagined" category. S/M as a means to climb the social ladder, S/M which liberates themind, cyber-S/M, S/M as magic ritual, college degrees in S/M, S/M as art. But even as these stories push the envelope of futurism and fantasy, they have their basis in our current reality.

It is not a fantasy to imagine that S/M can be a positive and healthy force in the sexuality of a modern person. I have written many a political essay on why S/M is not violence and why fantasies of nonconsensuality are liberating, and do not intend to paraphrase them here. But I should point out that one component of the much-trumpted leather community credo "safe, sane, consensual" is the knowledge of what is fantasy and what is not. When we play at S/M in the real world, our true fetish is for the scene itself, for the scenario of imaginary power we create between consenting partners. As such, the power which drives these stories is that intrinsic knowledge. Some stories will take the fantasy of imaginary nonconsent and run with it, while others will play with the border between consent and powerlessness. And no, I won't tell you which are which ... that's for you to find out for yourself.

Have I teased you enough? I think so.
