Description: This is an update of the standard reference in the field of fetology, the study and implications of abnormalities of the fetus. The book is comprehensive, concise, well illustrated, and an extremely valuable resource for perinatal healthcare providers. The first edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: According to the four authors, the book provides a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of conditions that affect the fetus. The implications of abnormal sonographic findings, abnormal chromosomal analysis, and abnormal growth are compiled in this one book, which will become an invaluable resource to practitioners.
Audience: The book is intended for practitioners and trainees in perinatal care. It will appeal most to practitioners in maternal-fetal medicine, but it will also be useful to general obstetricians, neonatologists, geneticists, and sonographers. The authors are well-known and respected authorities in the field.
Features: Introductory chapters detail prenatal imaging, screening procedures, and fetal interventions. The rest of the book is devoted to diagnosis and management of specific conditions, organized anatomically. This new edition has added chapters on adrenal masses, abdominal cysts, and screening for aneuploidy. The illustrations are superb, including very clear ultrasound and MR images. Each chapter opens with key points which highlight teaching points for each condition. Because there are just four authors, the book is evenly written. The only possible shortcoming is the limited space given to the neonatal and long-term developmental implications of many of the conditions. Perhaps adding a neonatal coauthor in the next edition could correct this deficiency.
Assessment: This book has rapidly become a go-to reference in the perinatal field and this new edition confirms its place as the gold standard in the field. Perinatologists will find this to be an essential part of their library. As more obstetric practitioners do investigative sonographic procedures in their offices, this book will be a valuable resource for them as well. The new edition is overdue and most welcome.
