Fey [NOOK Book]

Overview

Fairies disappeared from earth history around 1,000 A.D, and except for legends, were forgotten by humanity. Now, after the better part of two millennia, one is back. And where does someone look for a fairy, in the future? Perhaps… on a gambling casino space station? And look what a fairy can do there… "Fey" is a sometimes-whimsical, fun, and light fantasy/sci-fi adventure.

Meet the Author

Mike Lee lives and works in Denver, Colorado, as a psychotherapist (which he sometimes thinks is great practice for writing novels, since he believes that a lot of what passes for psychology these days is fiction, too.) His previous work has been published in magazines (as far away as Bulgaria) and in local newspapers, and has all been professional (relating to psychotherapy and psychology) or political in nature. An avid reader of all kinds of novels, as well as political commentary, he started writing fiction a few years ago as a hobby, and is fond of saying "It probably wouldn't have happened if they still made good TV shows."

A really good, "light reading" book... more sci-fi than fantasy.

There appear to be 3 or 4 authors named Mike Lee that appear on this site. This book is written by the Mike Lee that brought us "Horker's Law," which I enjoyed very much. "Fey" is a light sci-fi story, with about equl parts tension and fun. While the title and cover suggest it's about a farie character, it really isn't. It's sort of a futuristic crime/detective/fight-the-system story about a gambler who finds himself caught up in a struggle with powers-that-be within both his own government and competing factions. Like "Horker's Law," the protagonist undertakes this struggle by use of his wits, more than his muscles. This is a really fun story, maybe half as long as "Horker's Law," and maybe half as serious, as well... but just as clever. The character deveopement is just as strong, IMO. The plot twists are played out as the hero, Vince Lombard, figures out more and more of what's really happening in the story, and it's very logical, believable, and sometimes surprising! There are some editing errors in this book, as there were in the previous one, but fewer. I enjoyed this book, and look for more by the same author. I'm even hoping this will turn out to be a series, as the author notes suggest there may be other Vince Lombard stories.

Solid 4 and a half stars

Lost half a star for minor editing issues. Excellent 5 star story. A delightful and original mashup of sci fi, fairytale, and mystery story.
