Overview

A new edition of the bestselling book for fibromyalgia sufferers-with information on the latest medications and alternative and complementary therapies

Fibromyalgia, with its constant severe muscle pain, relentless fatigue, disturbed sleep, and feelings of depression, is regularly misdiagnosed and misunderstood, yet it is the most common arthritis-related disease next to osteoarthritis. While some feel these symptoms are part of growing older, fibromyalgia is not a sign of aging.

In this newly revised edition of his popular handbook, Dr. Harris H. McIlwain offers hope to millions of sufferers. His proven seven-step treatment program includes the very latest in such medications as Cox-2 Inhibitors, the breakthrough drugs that reduce pain and inflammation without stomach upset, and guaifenesin, a common ingredient in cough and cold medications that may lessen the symptoms of fibromyalgia. The program also has specific exercises to reduce deep muscle pain, to increase strength and energy, and to alleviate stress and anxiety. McIlwain tells what alternative approaches are safe to supplement his own treatment program, and offers an expanded discussion of complementary therapies that may be of benefit, such as homeopathy, chiropractic, aromatherapy, nutritional therapy, and herbal therapy. With McIlwain's program, fibromyalgia sufferers can manage the symptoms of the disease, reverse its progression in most cases, and improve the quality of their lives.

"...a full discussion of the much touted guaifenesin, and other new and experimental medications...includes the latest alternative therapies, such as Ayurveda and bodywork, chiropractic, herbal therapy, and homeopathy."

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In a compassionate guide, Prostate Cancer: A Family Consultation, oncologist Philip Kantoff, M.D., (with freelance writer Malcolm McConnell) steers both the patient and his family through the sometimes bewildering maze of screenings, diagnosis and treatment of the most common cancer diagnosed in American men. Kantoff explains the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test, which has led to increased early diagnoses of the disease and alternatives to surgery. He also clarifies how treatment affects quality of life and lists options available to those with advanced forms of prostate cancer. (Houghton Mifflin, $14.95 244p ISBN 0-395-71823-6; Nov.)
Library Journal
Fibromyalgia affects more than ten million Americans, largely women, ages 40 or older, and causes severe muscle pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depression. It rates as the most common arthritis-related disease, next to osteoarthritis, and as a commonly misdiagnosed syndrome. To help in controlling this difficult health problem, arthritis specialist McIlwain outlines a multistep program of medical treatment (moist heat, medication, ultrasound, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS), exercise and fitness, stress relief, complementary approaches (chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, biofeedback, and homeopathic treatment), nutrition and diet, and support groups. A useful appendix of exercises, a list of references and supporting research, and some frequently asked questions will assist in the patient's treatment. Recommended, especially when read in tandem with Devin Starlanyl and Mary Ellen Copeland's more comprehensive Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A Survival Manual (LJ 9/15/96).-Janet Coggan, Univ. of Florida Libs., Gainesville

    EAST meets WEST

This book is from the same authors of the Unofficial Guide to Alternative Medicine - outstanding book with a great combination of alternative and traditional treatments for fibromyalgia. This book helps you find the combination that best works for you in relieving the symptoms of fibromyalgia. THE FIBROMYALGIA HANDBOOK moved up a notch in covering the breakthrough medicines as well as secrets that only a physician that has treated thousands of fibromyalgia patients would know. EXCELLENT - BEST BOOK ON THE MARKET.
