Editorial Reviews

Ilene Cooper
Many librarians (and kids) will be familiar with this lively tune: "I had a cat / and the cat pleased me"; that's the beginning, and then a horse, a hen, and a goose come on the scene to frolic with a young boy. The cumulative rhyme is fun for listeners, and there's plenty of noisy sound effects to get them involved in the action. The watercolor pictures have a sprightly air, but the book's binding seems weak. Libraries who have other versions of this song, particularly Sweet's 1992 offering, may not need another variation; otherwise, it's worth consideration. Music appended.
