School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up-A well-researched, clearly organized biography. Madden provides a fascinating portrait of Cuba's political history as well as personal insights into its revolutionary leader. He cites Castro's involvement in campus politics at the University of Havana as a stepping stone to his career in national government. At the same time, he chronicles the corrupt political situation under Batista and the nation's foreign-dominated historical roots. Castro's rise to power in 1959, his vision for governing Cuba, and his tempestuous relations with the U.S. and the Soviet Union are fully described, as are his efforts over the years to aid revolutionary movements in other countries. A final chapter, ``Castro's Legacy,'' objectively weighs the successes of his regime against its many failings, especially in the area of human rights. The book is illustrated throughout with black-and-white photos, plus a full-color insert in the middle; a timeline of events, a glossary, and an annotated bibliography and list of media resources are appended.-Mary Jo Drungil, Niles Public Library, IL
