Fidel's Cuba: A Revolution in Pictures

Overview

Fidel’s Cuba commemorates the anniversary of the Cuban leader’s victory with black-and white portraits of great power. With an insider’s intimacy, Osvaldo and Roberto Salas followed Castro from his clean-shaven days to the Sierra Maestra, where he and Che Guevara prepared to lead insurgents to victory. The infamous Bay of Pigs invasion, the only known meeting of Ernest Hemingway and Fidel, and the daily life of the Cuban people are all chronicled here.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"In the end, if I have to sum up what I admire most about the Salases and their work, it is their professionalism. This book is a testament to that spirit and also to the lives they lived alongside one another, as father and son, each behind his own camera."
—from the foreword by John Lee Anderson

"What they capture with striking clarity is the personal and often romantic expression of figures as emotionally raw and complex as Che, Castro, his brother Raul, and confidante Celia Sanchez...These photographs (only now available in this country) access Castro's once passionate ideology and charisma."
—Library Journal

Meet the Author

Osvaldo Salas was born in Havana, Cuba, at the start of World War I. He was taken out of art school at age fourteen and moved to New York City. He became a respected photographer, photographing the luminaries of the day and age. During this time, he shot regular feature stories for influential Spanish-language publications worldwide. His photographs also appear in Life, Look, and numerous New York newspapers. Osvaldo died in 1992.

Roberto Salas was born in Bronx, New York. He started working in the darkroom for his father, Osvaldo, during his teen years. At age eighteen, Roberto and his father returned to Cuba to photograph the Revolution and work for Cuba’s leading newspaper, Revolucion. Roberto still lives and works in Havana. Together, the Salases have won nearly 60 first place awards in international competitions.

Prioritizing quality images and history rather than personal agenda

This book has maintained the integrity of all people involved in Fidel's life since the 50s. Roberto and Oswaldo Salas have shown us a world that the American government has omitted from our history textbooks. It is a beautiful and inspiring world and these photographers have brought this historical art to our attention in a dignified manner. Thank you! Finally what I had been looking for!
