Missy is so excited about the upcoming field trip that she does a happy dance before leaving for school. A field trip means a bus ride, special snacks, no schoolwork, and best of all—a gift shop. Oscar, her assigned partner for the trip, ignores Missy's enthusiastic listing of possible purchases in the gift shop. He tells her that the state capitol building is important because it is the place where the governor works. As the class tours the rotunda, learns about the dome, and views exhibits, Missy becomes more and more impatient to find the gift shop. When the guide tells her there is no gift shop, Missy comes up with a plan. She pulls Oscar aside and they take off to find the governor. They rush past his secretary and disrupt a meeting in progress, but the governor agrees to talk to them in spite of their rude behavior. Missy and Oscar explain why the capitol building should have a gift shop. The governor agrees that a gift shop is a great idea and then escorts the two children to the school bus. The closing page shows Missy at the Grand Opening of the Gift Shop. Most teachers and parents will find the theme of this book a bit disturbing. Readers are left with the impression that a gift shop is the most important part of a field trip. Part of the "Missy's Super Duper Royal Deluxe" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
