Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
On a winter afternoon, Jill reads a scary book about a fox to her dog Friendly. The fox character frightens them both. Soon they stop reading and look out the window. A blizzard has blown in painting the world white. Jill and Friendly decide to ski down to her friends’ book store and help shovel them out, but Jill has no skis. Suddenly a banging at the door brings her friend Jim who has two skis and is ready to share one with Jill. However, Jill is scared of a creature she saw out the window that may be a snow fox. Unfortunately, Friendly dashes out the door and after some thought Jill and Jim decide to head into the whiteness to save him. What happens next is all fun and delight as the friends spy Friendly following a “snow fox”. This book, by an award-winning author, offers a delightful tale with likeable characters and quick-paced action. The plot fits the first and second grade level for which it is intended and the four short chapters are just right for emerging readers. The book is level 2 which consists of introducing readers to new vocabulary and longer sentences with easy to comprehend text. Whimsical illustrations add to the story because due to the deep snow the “fox” is not allowed to be completely seen until almost the end. This book is one of the “Fiercely and Friends” series and young readers will enjoy many more with the same characters. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury; Ages 5 to 7.
