Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Here's a counting and vocabulary book that, in a refreshing twist, teaches in English and Spanish. In a south-of-the-border setting, a group of children make their way around a village gathering items for a party ("fiesta"). From "Una canasta/ One basket" to "Cinco trompos/ Five tops" and "Diez serpentinas/ Ten streamers," the correct number of objects can be counted in each picture, while the text on the facing page asks, "Qu ms?/ What else?" The familiar, limited number of itemsand vocabulary wordsmakes it all the more likely that children will absorb the language and counting lessons, although the absence of a pronunciation guide may hamper some would-be polyglots. Moreno's (The Pocket Book) pastel, watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations afford an idyllic, soft-lensed view of frolicking children, kindly merchants and such atmospheric elements as mariachis and an open-air market. The pictures also add a story to the counting/vocabulary class: all the objects go into the creation of a piata, which explodes ("Pau!/ Crack!") in a jubilant party scene at the end. Ol! Ages 5-up. Children's Literature - Dorina Lazo Gilmore
Counting in English and Spanish comes alive in this bilingual book for preschoolers. Each double-page spread counts items picked out at the market to fill a pinata for a children's party or "fiesta." The Spanish/English text encourages readers to try out new words and phrases in both languages. Readers count one basket (canasta), two horns (trompetas), three little animals (animalitos), four airplanes (aviones), and so on through ten. Each spread invites readers to turn the page after the repeated refrain, "What else?" (¿Que mas?) While the concept of this book is fun, the illustrations are too subtle. The pictures are rendered in muted pastels, watercolors, and colored pencils, which makes it difficult to identify the objects being counted. The ten featured objects are not distinct enough for young children to pick out from the rest of the scene. Some of the wonder and the building of excitement in the text are lost through the illustrations. Reviewer: Dorina Lazo Gilmore

PreS-Gr 2Three children begin with una canasta (one basket) and proceed to fill it with scrumptious candies, trinkets, and toys in preparation for a Mexican fiesta. Readers are invited to count along as they gather dos trompetas (two horns), tres animalitos (three little animals), cuartro aviones (four airplanes), cinco trompos (five tops), etc. in joyous anticipation of the party and the cracking open of the piata. A simple bilingual text provides numbers in English and in Spanish. The soft-edged full-color illustrations done in pencils, pastels, and watercolors have a subtle folkloric quality. The colorful artwork complements the simplicity and childlike appeal of this delightful picture book.Selene S. Vasquez, New York Public Library

¡Fiesta! ( August 1996; 32 pp.; 0-688-14331-8): In this English/Spanish counting book, Guy (Black Crow, Black Crow) takes readers shopping in a mercado (a market) as they purchase ten items typically found in a piñata, the basket stuffed with goodies that children crack open with a stick. Big type and minimal text on cheerful, full-bleed illustrations provide an easy, fun way to learn Spanish or English words and numbers; they also provide a gentle puzzle propelled by the repetition of the phrase ¿Qué más? (What else?) that is happily answered with the commencement of a party at book's end.
