Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Finally, Fiestas: A Year of Latin American Songs of Celebration, selected, arranged and translated by JosE-Luis Orozco, illus. by Elisa Kleven, marks the third collection of songs for the pair. This one suggests a song for every month, along with a description of the holiday it commemorates. (Sept.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Criticas
Gr 2-5-In his latest collection, Orozco has gathered over 20 tunes, both traditional and original, to use for Latin American celebrations. He performs the upbeat selections in a clear, strong voice as he sings, strums his guitar, chants, and claps. Beginning with the Epiphany celebration in January, the songs celebrate labor leader Cesar Chavez's birthday in March and the Day of the Dead in November. All songs are especially appropriate for classroom use. Kleven's colorful, whimsical illustrations brim with everyday life. Teachers and parents will appreciate the lyrics and the musical notation in the book, along with the explanatory paragraph preceding each song and the themed subject index. Bilingual educators and Spanish-language teachers will find themselves reaching for this volume again and again. Recommended for school and public libraries.

Children's Literature
Some of the most beautiful childhood songs of Latin America are compiled in this brilliant book written by Orozco. He is committed to helping Latin families to rediscover the pleasure of family participation in musical activities occurring within the context of Holiday Celebrations. It brings to life these Latin celebrations and traditions throughout the year and invites the reader to get up and dance and sing with joy. On each page there is a song with lyrics in both Spanish and English, and arrangements for guitar, piano and voice, as well as a little history behind the song. This approach encourages the actual experience of music rather than just educational information about it. The colorful illustrations by Elisa Kleven, combined with her whimsical borders, offer pleasure to the eye and match what Jose-Luis Orozco is trying to express and share about the rich and colorful Spanish culture and what it has to offer. 2002, Dutton Children's Books,

Kirkus Reviews
Orozco (Diez Deditos, 1997, etc.) once again combines his talents as a musician, a songwriter, and an educator to create this collection of songs set into the framework of the year's festivities, with an emphasis on holidays of Latin American (particularly Mexican) origin. He has chosen songs from various countries throughout the hemisphere, but in some cases he has used well-known melodies and written his own words to suit a particular holiday or commemoration, such as in the song for Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday that is also celebrated by Mexican-American communities in the US. His call-and-response chant honoring Cesar Chavez is another original composition, while a singing game like "Arroz con leche" is from the folk tradition. Each is preceded by a short paragraph offering background on the holiday and the song. Texts are given in Spanish and English, although the English translations are meant for singing and may not be literal translations. There are songs for every month including two religious ones for December. Kleven's (The Dancing Deer and the Foolish Hunter, p. 48, etc.) paintings with their jewel-like colors and merrily dancing children, adults, and animals mix elements of realism and fantasy. The strongest images come from Mexico, such as the Mexican skeleton musicians for the Day of the Dead, and the posadas procession with its pi-atas and paper-cut banners lining the streets. The subject index leads the reader to songs used for clapping, dancing, and group play, as well as those that can be used to bolster self-esteem, or think about friendship. Orozco's community activism and social beliefs are demonstrated throughout the collection and schools with Latinopopulations will be very interested in this attractive songbook. All of the songs are available on Orozco's CDs and tapes from Arcoiris Records, Inc. This will also be useful for teaching young children Spanish and for introducing some of the Latin American holiday traditions. (Nonfiction. 5-10)
