The Fight (Drama High Series #1)

horrible book....

well first i thought it was gonna be good, but then i read it and it was so confusing. i found it hard to connect to any of the characters, it wasn't realistic and on top of that, the author kept adding all these new characters out of now where. she didn't explain the scenes good so i couldn't tell where they were in the book. i just think this book is really bad....too bad i bought it!

A very captivating concept and main plot... unfortunately held back by lackluster writing

The book has a very interesting and supposedly interesting concept but with a lot of cons that drags it near rock bottom. I had to literally force myself to read through one-hundred and sixty-three pages and I couldn't even do that without taking a day's long break after each chapter. It's a shame too because I REALLY wanted to like this story. There are little to no black teen stories that revolves around positive role models.

The story is told from the point-of-view of Jayd and I must admit she's a very well-written characters(in terms of being character that young black teens can idolize). She's a virgin and she doesn't let any man of hers control or ruin her life(which is much less than I can say for majority of today's literature). She's not perfect but she's trying her best to shake her past and the person she once was to be a better person. She's intelligent, humorous, insightful, and helpful. And, while I'm glad the story is told in her POV, I wish there were other characters that we can follow at some points. Jayd hangs with two very funny and eccentric girls that I would have liked to learn more about. Through the book we're also introduced to Jayd's crowded homelife. We meet her very traditional, spiritual grandmother and a bunch of uncles and cousins.

While Jayd sounds like the saving grace of the book, the pacing nearly ruins it to almost-unforgivable status. The plot of the book is about Jayd anticipating a scheduled fight with her ex-boyfriend's, KJ, new girlfriend. She battles her inner-demons as she's trying not to be the feisty girl who she was in the past and while it sounds entertaining in theory you should know that it's not nearly enough to fill in 163 pages without the occasional filler chapter. And boy does this book comes with fillers! Most of which were hardly entertaining at all.

Another problem I had with the book was little to no emotional drawback. (SPOILER ALERT!)In the beginning of the story Jayd witnesses a young teen, no older than her, get murdered right before her eyes. She tries to help the guy but he unfortunately dies right in her arms. And instead of setting up an emotional path for Jayd to follow, she nearly shrugs it off and goes home. The entire event was just irrelevant and useless to the story and was never even mentioned throughout the rest of the story. I suppose it was thrown in there to set up the typical it's-a-hard-knocked-life-for-us setting that urban books usually have.

Overall, the book is draggy and boring for majority of it but I'm an optimistic and I feel like the series can't get any worst. Eventually, I'll get the second book and give it a quick run-through before officially dropping the series completely.

DANGGG!!!

OMG! It was excellente! this book had me under my night stand @ 12:23 in the mornin' (no joke!) suckin' in all the juicy details. I luv the way Jayd stood up the way she did and never took any mess. This book shows u how grimy and evil people may be even the ones u THINK are ur friends

Good yet dull

I've seen this book ever since it came out in 2006 it took me three years to convince me to pick it up and buy it. I dont like reading stories or series without fishing them. I just finished 2nd chance on 11/28/09 it was better than the first. the 3rd one was better than the first and second. what im basically saying is it gets better as it go's along.

An unbiased review

I honestly can't believe most of the people reviewing this book gave it an instant 5-stars. This book, despite the interesting concept, falls a little below excellent. The story is told through a first person POV of the book's protagonist, Jayd. Jayd is an interesting person and I definitely enjoy her perspective on social issues and political imbalances. It does a good job at tackling both the superficial drama of high school and the deeper issues in life. The book starts to fall in quality with the pacing. The book is EXTREMELY slow. I know the book is called 'The Fight' but I didn't know it was literally going to revolve around an anticipated battle. If Drama High was a TV show then all 163 of those pages would've been one episode. There are a lot of chapters that the book could have gone without. It's surely obvious that a lot of chapters were added just to make the book lengthy. Some parts of the book was exciting and others were just slow and boring. I also wish the story went into perspective of other characters like Nellie. Jayd is a likable protagonist but I wish we could see more of the other character's lives. Overall, the book definitely has boring parts that can be skipped but it's worth the read simply for being an urban teen book. Not many books follow in that genre. I'm going to get the 2nd book in hopes that the pacing has changed after this 'pilot'.

I read this book in one day and I must say It was GREAT! They really should make this book series as a tv show like Gossip Girl.

One of the best sereis ever.

4A I thought that this book had alot of detail. The author really descibes the culture of Jayds family. I really liked the how she made one character changed completly, to keep the story moving.There wasnt one thing that I didnt like about this book. I did'nt think that the character Misty had a very important part in the book, but I was very wrong. Just a little imput from her character would change the story. This book kept me itching for more, I loved it.

excellent drama series

This is an excellent story for all high schoolers who are going through 'drama themselves'. This girl has spunk, beauty, and brains. Though it wasn't easy getting there. All teenagers should read this book.

I have read all of the Drama High books.L.Divine is a great author,I can't wait for Frenemies. I recommend this book especially for African American teens.

Well....

Yea like da rating says it aint dat great. I mean da whole book wuz about a fight dat the author dragged on and on until the end of the book and i dont really understand where voodoo and wut not comes in dis book. but in the end the book does have a very surprising ending. and i guess girls my age (13-17) should read it. you'll realize how much jayd's (the girl in the book) life is like your :)

captivating look at teen life

Okay

I think that you should not buy this book because it is very hard to follow.Also,it is a book with some stereotypes. For example, the cover makes it look like all of our young African American women fight and get into silly arguments about men.
