Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
Zoom! A fighter jet roars by, making quick turns and rolling upside down to escape enemy fire. Early readers who love their machines fast and loud will find much to like in this nonfiction book about fighter jets. Intended for readers in first grade and up, some early readers may need a bit of support in tackling this book. The author does a good job of using simple text and short sentences, but some difficult words are inevitable given the genre. Readers will enjoy learning about the fighter jet, its capabilities, and its development over time. Excellent photography supports the text throughout. Several fighter jets are profiled, including: Germany's Me262 Schwalbe, one of the fastest fighter jets from the 1940s; the United States' F-15 Eagle which began service in 1976; and the F-22 Raptor, a stealth fighter used by the United States since 2005. Included are a brief glossary, index and table of contents, in addition to web site and further reading suggestions. Part of the eight-title "Built for Battle" series, this title is as consistently well-written as the others in the series, and would be a welcome addition to any classroom or library looking to increase its nonfiction selection aimed at younger readers.
