Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
Fighter jets are indeed "Vehicles on the Move," the series for which this book is a part. Who, what, when, where and why are all covered here as young readers learn what fighter jets are and the role they play in the armed forces. Readers fascinated by airplanes will love the chapters on the parts of the fighter jet and pilot gear, particularly the well-chosen photos used to illustrate both. Ten different fighter jets are profiled, including stealth aircraft, the F-22 Raptor and the F-15 Eagle. Speed, weapons capabilities, cost and purpose are profiled for each. Written for young readers at a grade two reading level, chapters and sentences are both short. Unlike many nonfiction books in this genre, this text is written with the understanding the young readers do not have the patience to turn to the glossary to find out what a word means; large concept words are explained in simple terms immediately within the text. A Bobbie Kalman book, a glossary is, however, included for further clarification, along with a table of contents and a brief index. Early elementary classrooms working on transportation units will find this book a welcome addition to their resource library. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
