More About This Book

Overview

In recent years, mixed martial arts, also known as "ultimate fighting", has become the
fastest-growing sport in American society, but it is also considered the most
controversial. Based on interviews conducted with forty mixed martial arts athletes,
Fighting for Acceptance answers these questions:

  • Who are the ultimate fighters?
  • How did they become involved in the sport?
  • What goes on in their heads while competing?
  • Do the fighters feel a social responsibility to preach nonviolence out of the
    sport?
  • How do they see themselves fitting into today's society?

Authors David Mayeda, a mixed martial arts fan and occasional fighter, and David
Ching explore these political and sociological issues through in-depth interviews with
fighters such as Randy "The Natural" Couture, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson,
"Dangerous" Dan Henderson, Jason "MayheM" Miller, Antonio McKee, Frank Trigg,
Travis Lutter, Chris "The Crippler" Leben, and Guy Mezger.

Fighting for Acceptance is for the sport's fans and its critics alike as it delves into the
ramifications of the athletic event. This growing phenomenon is so controversial that
many still question if it should even be considered a sport.

    Human Dog Fighting

This is not a sport. It is Human Dog Fighting and it is such a shame that young people are falling for all the hype. It is just another way to exploit our youth and make them walking billboards of death.

    good book

I bought this book strictly for the handsome gentleman on the cover. Then while reading it, I became filled with rage and decided to turn my life around and become a ruthless street boxer. Books have more effect on me than TV and video games.

    Greatest forward ever written!

I picked this book up while looking for a gift for my grandmother's birthday. I felt totally lost and alone in my life, and was questioning a lot of things about my existence. That all changed after I read the forward to this book. Everything finally became clear for me. I kicked drugs, stopped stripping, went back to school, and now I am a very successful business woman. Thank you, Jason Miller. I owe everything to you. I plan to read the rest of this book one day also.

    Incredible

Mezmerising, captivating, heart warming, butterfly causing, so many adjectives there are that would still have a hard time encompassing the imagery and overall excellence in the forward of this book. A truly great read!

    Something of Interest

This book really does captivate the MMA enthusiast. I thought it was exciting, informative, and everything I would hope to have found in an MMA book. I would recommend it to anything in MMA, or to their fans alike.

    Splendifferous

Excellent book for use of reading indoors or outdoors. The versatility of this book amazed me. I was even able to read it in a sun porch. Which is kind of a mix between being inside and outside at the same time. Make the purchase.

This book is enlightening to say the least!

This book is a must for all the hard core MMA fans as well as the new fans that have caught the MMA bug through the growth of the sport on mainstream TV. Two professors explore the many different facets of MMA and show that it is not just about fighting anymore.
