Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
World War II remains the most destructive war in human history. Over the period of 1939-45 over fifty million people perished worldwide as part of that terrible conflict. During those years the confrontation between the Axis Powers and the Allies spread to nearly every corner of the globe. In the African deserts, across the frozen steppes of Russia, on the volcanic islands of the pacific, and in the vast reaches of the oceans men fought and killed one another. World War II also featured a totality of war that was far different than any other modern war. It is the Second World War that is the featured subject for this illustrated work. Combining a slim but thoughtful narrative with an array of pictures, World War II: Fighting for Freedom is an excellent introduction to this conflict. In fact, it is the pictures that make this relatively inexpensive book one that a reader with an interest in military history will appreciate. Page after page of photographs bring to life the realities of the war. Images of American Marines struggling on Guadalcanal, German U-Boat sailors in their cramped quarters, or Russian tanks racing across the battlefield of Kursk all are representative of a keen eye for visual display that marks this book. World War II: Fighting for Freedom is certainly not a comprehensive look at the war but it is one that younger readers will appreciate not only for its literary content but also because of the photos that take us back in time.
