Overview

Ryan Kendall is broken. He understands pain. He knows the hand of violence and the ache of loss. He knows what it means to fail those who need you. Being broken doesn't stop him wanting the one thing he can't have; Finlay Tanner. Her smile is sweet and her future bright. She's the girl he grew up with, the girl he loves, the girl he protects from the world, and from himself.

At nineteen, Ryan leaves to join the Australian Army. After years of training he becomes an elite SAS soldier and deploys to the Afghanistan war. His patrol undertakes the most dangerous missions a soldier can face. But no matter how far he runs, or how hard he fights, his need for Finlay won't let go.

Returning home after six years, one look is all it takes to know he can't live without her. But sometimes love isn't enough to heal what hurts. Sometimes people like him can't be fixed, and sometimes people like Finlay deserve more than what's left.

This is a story about war and the cost of sacrifice. Where bonds are formed, and friendships found. Where those who are strong, fall hard. Where love is let go, heartache is born, and heroes are made. Where one man learns that the hardest fight of all, is the fight to save himself.

This book will reach straight into your chest, grab your heart and hold it tightly the entire time. Literally from the first chapter I was completely emotionally vested in this novel.  I won't recap or summarize for you here, you can read the blurb. I'll just simply state that this story truly is one of love and redemption, as the title suggests. It shows our main characters at integral shaping points in their history that will give you the most in-depth knowledge of their souls, you won't even believe it. It was just so sincere and gripping that I find it hard to even convey.  This novel was just beautifully done and I am sure you won't be disappointed in it at all. You will instead have the privilege of taking this sweet, honest journey that culminates in an emotional and enthralling conclusion.

What an amazing book. It made me laugh, it made me cry, I feel my heart break then come back together. I highly recommend this book to any reader that wants to feel exactly what these characters are feeling.

Fighting Redemption book review I was moved to tears. Tears streaming down my face is what kind of book this is. It will pull at your heart strings until you think they might even break you along with them. I have not had some one in the military to have to go to a war and fight, but I feel for each and every person who had to have someone in their family to be sent off to fight for us.  This book, in my mind, has covered this feeling very well. I will say this book will bring you to tears and beyond, but it is worth every tear shed. I just can not say enough great things about this book. I have given this book the highest honor I could. I can not believe how moved I am by the words that were honored to grace this book together.  The story line was made correctly to get you, the reader to fall in love with the characters that are very well defined to understand where they come from with their decisions that they make. The story line or the characters could not be any better for this book. I, as the reader, love it as it is. Don't change a thing. ;)   5 Stars I got an ARC for a real honest review.

I enjoy this book though sometimes there was too much unnecessary angst, so much that it felt overdramatized. I imagine some people may be like that, but I got tired of reading about somebody (Ryan) purposedly destroying any chance of happyness with the woman he supposedly loved (Fin). I found him selfish at times, breaking her heart over and over again with the excuse of doing what was best for her. Yet despite this I liked the storyline and would buy more books from this author.

Must Read!!! 5+ Stars  Fighting Redemption is the first book I read by Kate McCarthy and it will definitely not be my last. I was a little skeptical about reading this book since the last time I read a romance/war book I was not able to connect to the characters or the story. Anyway, I gave it a go and it was the BEST decision ever!!!  Ryan meets Jake and Fin on their first day at school when he helped her after falling on the stairs. From that point on Ryan and Jake become fast friends. One day as Ryan and Jake speak of their future plans they both vow to join the army together. Eventually Jake figures out Ryan’s secret but he makes him promise not to tell anyone.  Ryan finds refuge with Jake and his family, The Tanners. Fin having an extra special place in his heart, always observing her from afar. As the years pass by Ryan is a constant at the Tanner’s family and his feeling for Fin continue to grow. He is reluctant to act upon them since he does not feel worthy of her and wants only the best for her. As soon as Ryan graduates he enlists in the Australian army and Jake joins him shortly after.  Six years have passed and Fin is hurt that Ryan never tried to makes any type of contact with her since he left. The last time she had seen and spoke with him was when he had snuck into her room and waited for her to say his goodbye. So she tries to move on and continues her relationship with her boyfriend Ian.  Two weeks before Fin is scheduled to leave to Antarctica for her research Ryan comes back home with Jake. When Ryan and Fin finally see each other all the feelings that they had tried to suppress come back full force. No matter how hard they tried to hide it, Ian had seen right thru it. Deep down Ian knew that no matter how long he had been with Fin she was never really his, there was always something missing and that something was Ryan. Finn leaves everything behind when she leaves to Antarctica and eventually Jake and Ryan go back on duty.  Just when you think you will get a break in this story tragedy strikes and lives will be lost, hearts will be broken, sacrifices will be made and secrets will be revealed.  This book is an emotional rollercoaster, it made me laugh and it literally made me cry. I wish I could unread it just so I can read it for the first time again. Now clear your schedule, hide in your reading spot, and have some tissues on hand because once you start reading this book you will not be able to put it down. ***ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review***

What can I say about this book that already has not been said with all the fantastic reviews out there?  Kate has brought us one PHENOMENAL story. Fighting Redemption is so beautifully written, that at times throughout this book I honestly had to stop and catch my breath or wipe the tears from my eyes.  A beautiful emotional journey of redemption! That is what this story is. The best way to describe this story is by the synopsis without ruining it for anyone. So I am going to share that as well as some of my thoughts and favorite quotes from the book.  This is a story about war and the cost of sacrifice. Where bonds are formed, and friendships found. Where those who are strong, fall hard. Where love is let go, heartache is born, and heroes are made. Where one man learns that the hardest fight of all, is the fight to save himself. Ryan Kendall is broken. He understands pain. He knows the hand of violence and the ache of loss. He knows what it means to fail those who need you. Being broken doesn’t stop him wanting the one thing he can’t have; Finlay Tanner. Her smile is sweet and her future bright. She’s the girl he grew up with, the girl he loves, the girl he protects from the world, and from himself.  At nineteen, Ryan leaves to join the Australian Army. After years of training he becomes an elite SAS soldier and deploys to the Afghanistan war. His patrol undertakes the most dangerous missions a soldier can face. But no matter how far he runs, or how hard he fights, his need for Finlay won’t let go. Returning home after six years, one look is all it takes to know he can’t live without her. But sometimes love isn’t enough to heal what hurts. Sometimes people like him can’t be fixed, and sometimes people like Finlay deserve more than what’s left. “I’ll love you longer than the stars that live in the sky.” I LOVED how Kate put this story together. This is the story of sacrifice, brotherhood, and what our men in the military do daily to protect this country and the people they love.  I understood why Ryan chose to leave even though he loved Fin with all his heart. He needed to follow through with his plan for himself. To be the man he wanted to be. We feel every emotions throughout this story. It definitely gripped my heart strings on more than one occasion throughout the story.  “I have a thick skin, baby...but you're under it. You're buried in there so deep it's like I was born with you in my soul. When I'm near you I'm consumed by you--your smile, your eyes, your heart. Even though we've never been together, you've always been mine, and even if I never get to keep you, you'll still be mine.” “You’re the strongest person I’ve ever known, but someone smart and brave once told me that it’s always the strongest that fall the hardest. You can trust me, Ryan. Let go. I’ll be here to catch you. I’ll always be here.” “You can’t leave me,” he whispered thickly, fumbling blindly for her hand and taking it in his. “Can you hear me? You can’t. I won’t allow it. I need you.” “That’s how I remember you. But you’re not looking at me like that now, and I need you to do that. I need you to wake up and smile at me like I’m your everything, because without you, I’m not anyone’s anything.” “Every piece of me is in here.” He placed his palm flat on her chest, feeling her heart beat hard and steady beneath his fingers. He closed his eyes briefly at the beauty of it. “My breath, my heart, my life. I won’t ever leave you if you keep that safe inside of you.” “I missed you too.” “It’s been six years.” Ryan nodded again, staring at her, and replied softly, “I know.” “I hurt too. For six years I fought every day not to think of you, and I lost, because every day you were all I could see. You were the best thing in my life—so sweet and innocent, and so goddamn tempting.” I can honestly say that this story along with Jake, Kyle, Ryan and Finlay have touched my heart and will be with me for the rest of my life.

I know a book is going to gut me if I start tearing up during the prologue. That is exactly what happened after I read Fighting Redemption’s first few pages. Kate McCarthy’s writing hones in on your heart-strings right from the beginning and doesn’t let go until the very last sentence. Using the war on terror in Afghanistan as a backdrop, this story spans the years with two characters who have a deep and complicated history together. You watch as these two people grow up and discover that the things they thought they always wanted and maybe deserved for themselves, may not be what is in store for them. Ryan Kendall is the kind of guy that you want to love. He is literally the cute boy next door. He’s loyal, funny, and has a deeply troubled home life. He finds solace in his neighbors, the Tanner family. His best friend is Jake Tanner, who is like a brother to him. Jake comes with a pesky little sister, Finley. The three of these kids grow up together, becoming friends, confidants, and more. And because this is a romance novel, Kate gives you a angsty, unrequited love story that has you wanting to push Finley and Ryan together. I love the Kate gives us a deep back story and history for these characters. You really invest in the story because of it. I also love the military aspect of the plot. I think this angle draws out the suspense of the relationships. Ryan has chosen to sacrifice his life to serve his country, something he has wanted all his life. The reasons behind Ryan’s choices will break your heart. Watching him walk out of Finley’s life is gut wrenching. So many things are left unsaid. After reading this particular part in the book, my heart dropped. It stirred feelings of loss and regret in my chest. I love Jake and Finley’s relationship. It starts out as the big brother, annoying little sister situation at first. But Kate turns it into a loving and supportive friendship that had me on the verge of tears many times. The secondary characters are wonderfully written as well. Finley’s best friend Rachael is hilarious, exuding all that comes with a bestie. She goads her friend into stepping out of her boring routines, she comforts her when she needs it, and calls her out on her b.s. when necessary. Ian, Finley’s on and off again boyfriend, adds a good amount of tension and angst to this story. He has to compete with the attraction Finley and Ryan have, something they refuse to give into. It’s so frustrating! But I love it. You feel for the guy, yet you know he should just give up the ghost. Jake and Finley’s parents are wonderful characters as well. They are good people who love their kids, a relationship that is refreshing to read. Kate’s writing is wonderfully descriptive and rich. From the homey setting of the Tanner’s Australian home, to the arid desert of Afghanistan, you feel like you are there with the characters. The romance aspect is tastefully done. You feel all the emotion between Ryan and Finley before they make love. They’ve been through so much to get to this point and I didn’t want it to be a quick shag. Kate is descriptive, giving you all the emotion, tension, and love that you want to see these two emanate. I absolutely loved Fighting Redemption. It has everything I want in a romance–a deeply rooted love story, wonderfully rich/flawed characters, a turbulent backdrop of war, and a plot that keeps you guessing right to the very end. I cried quite a few times while reading, something that doesn’t happen very often. I invested in these people and they still walk around in my thoughts when I’m busy doing other things. In my mind, that is the sign of a fantastically written story. I give Fighting Redemption 5 out of 5 stars! Written by Dee McGee - Booze, Bookz, and Bad Boyz

Find this review and more at Lusty Penguin Reviews! Fighting Redemption is a heart-wrenching story of love, loss, and forgiveness by Kate McCarthy. The author pulls you into her story with believable characters, creating a gripping character-driven romance. Australian Army SAS solider Ryan Kendall has been in love with Finlay “Fin” Tanner since grace school and is best friends with her older brother, Jake. Ryan is a complex character because he carries the shame of being an abused child and suffers from survivor’s guilt after losing someone close to him. Ryan sees himself as broken, too broken, to be the right man for Fin. Throughout the story, Ryan struggles with being the man Fin needs and the weight of his past, which just made my heart break. Having always loved Ryan, Fin is devastated when he joins the army with Jake and leaves her behind. Fin suffers from a broken heart since Ryan never contacts her during the six years he is away. Showing great courage, she tries moving on and having a serious relationship with someone else, which endeared her character to me. When Ryan finally returns, the two think the time might finally be right and they give a serious relationship a go. Their chemistry sizzles, and the bedroom play is full of passion. I was completely taken in by their relationship and had to keep turning pages through all the gut-wrenching plot twists to see if this couple was going to find the happily ever after they deserve. I even double-checked that Fighting Redemption was a romance because, at one point, I wasn’t certain that the happy ending was ever going to happen. Let me tell you, McCarthy doesn’t disappoint. Captivating and memorable characters and heartbreaking plot twists make Fighting Redemption a love story that will stay with you long after reading the last page. Do make sure you have tissues on hand because if you are anything like me, you are going to need them frequently. I received an eBook copy of the book from the author for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. I don't even know where to start with this book-so I guess I'll start with this: Expect the unexpected! Oh...and prepare to have your heart broken and repaired. Dozens of times! This may be classified as a romance novel, but I think it's so much more than that. It's really a story about family and love and how deeply the choices you make effect others. There were times when I found Ryan's selflessness frustrating, because it came at the cost of his happiness-as well as Fin's. But I truly think Ryan didn't know that. He put what Fin had always wanted ahead of what he wanted in every instance. While this was selfless, it was also a reflection of how unworthy Ryan felt, and my heart just broke for him. He was so fixed on being everyone's hero that he never focused on what he needed. I really liked Fin. Though she was in love with Ryan and wanted to be with him, I think she remained strong. She wouldn't just take him under any circumstances-when he was a jerk, she let him know it. She didn't sweep his actions under the rug. She was a fantastic female lead-strong, fiesty, and level-headed. She knew what she wanted, and she went for it. I loved the steam in this book. Ryan and Fin were so sexy together. Fin and Ryan faced so many obstacles. It was heartwrenching to witness them all. I definitely recommend Fighting Redemption if you are looking for a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat and stay with you for a long time. Just be warned-the twist and turns don't stop until the very end!

**ARC** There are not enough Stars in the Universe to give this book! It is a book that I know I will be picking up to read for years to come Ryan Kendall grew in a broken family and knows all too well what it is like to suffer from loss. He spent most of his late childhood and early teens at his best friend Jakes house trying to fight and hide his feelings for Jake’s sister Finlay. Ryan needs to escape from Finlay feeling if they were ever to be together he would just hurt her and ruin her heart. Not realizing that by leaving to join the S.A.S. he has already done that to her. Ryan and Finlays story is an emotional, heart wrenching, ugly crying story. I found myself whaling like someone who has just lost the love of their life about 80% of this book. I could not HELP but to feel the emotions from these as they fought their love for one another.  As Ryan is off fighting a war and trying to ignore his feelings for Finlay, Jake is making sure that he knows what she is up to in life, because Jake knows deep down in his heart, that his best friend and sister are soul mates and he is okay with them loving one another. “Six years, Ryan, do you know how hurt I was, each day passing by and not even a note or an email? I didn’t just lose you, I lost my brother too, both of you left me, but I was ok with that, I understood that this was what you needed to do, so I moved on.” <3 Finlay  When Ryan joins Jake for their leave, he decides to stay with the siblings so that he can be close to Finlay. The whole time Ryan is around, the both of them are fighting every fiber of their bodies to not give into the temptations of one another. I have never felt crazier chemistry flying off of the pages of a book as I did when reading this one. When Finlay and Ryan finally confront one another about things that have been happening the last 6 years, Finlay is tearing my heart apart as she tells Ryan how she has felt about him ignoring her the whole time. “This. Us. Yes, okay? I want you. Is that what you want to hear? That I dream of you too?” she choked out. “Your hands on me, inside of me, and I ache too.” <3 Finlay  I was holding my breath the whole time I was reading this part of confrontation, because I just wanted them both to profess their feelings to one another and just have sex already! When they finally give into the temptations of love and chemistry, you can feel all of the hurt, anger, hate, sadness and ultimately love that these two share between one another. “Even though we’ve never been together, you’ve always been mine, and even if I never get to keep you, you’ll still be mine.” <3 Ryan  Just like always though, Ryan is trying as hard as he can to not fall into a relationship with Finlay because he knows he is leaving soon to return to War. He distances himself to the barrack for the rest of the time home on leave and boards the plane without saying Goodbye to her once again. While Jake & Ryan are off in war, tragedy strikes the unit, and he is thrown into a shell of himself. Ryan has some secret from his past that he has been hiding from Jake and his family, that he knows now more than ever that he needs to confront in order to help him move on. Ryan knows that he has to do this in order to help Fin with her loss. He knows more than anyone realizes just what this family is going threw. These two tattered souls will need to be the glue that eventually pulls their shattered and torn hearts back together. “You’re the strongest person I’ve ever known, but someone smart and brave once told me that it’s always the strongest that fall the hardest. You can trust me, Ryan. Let go. I’ll be here to catch you. I’ll always be here. <3 Finlay  **I truly can not put into words how I felt while reading this book. I was so torn up emotionally that I was pissed when it ended. I wanted the story to keep going, I wanted to fix them both, I wanted to hold their hearts in my hands and help them heal, I wanted to be the mother that Ryan needed to tell him that the Universe brings people into our lives and throws situations at us in order to see what great things have always been there all along. This is my first novel by Kate that I have read and I know without a doubt that it will not be my last. This book has had such an EPIC impact on my life, that I know I will never forget it <3

How many ways can you say outstanding and beautifully amazing and yet still try to fine the words to write a review  to gives this book Justice., and also express at the same time how said book not only stole all your emotions and the ability to form a coherent sentence but also stole your heart right along side every thing else... If someone said if you could  have everything in the world neatly wrapped up and put together into one form what would it be... My immensity response without hesitation would be "THIS BOOK"  that is how important and extremely Beautiful this story is..it has everything and  it is everything and not much can compare to it... I seriously recommend this book as a must read, must have and must own book... 5-million-and-more-out-of-this-universe-and-beautifully-over-the-top-perfect-stars  <3

This book was very well written regarding deployments, military, etc. The emotion between Fin and Ryan was believable. But this book had so many high rolling emotions constantly that it was almost too difficult to get through. There wasn't a lot of smooth sailing, getting to know you, laughing together type of moments. It started dramatic and ended dramatically. While I am ok with books like that occasionally, I think this would have benefited tons if the author had let the roller-coaster even out for a bit here and there. otherwise, it's a decently good book.
