Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Washington Post reporter Mufson recounts how the 1984-86 black uprising, while failing to overthrow the government and abolish apartheid, has set South Africa on a course of inevitable change. In telling the stories of Winnie Mandela and of ordinary black South Africans, he shows that, although violence was a last resort, the economic strain of massive civil disorder plus international pressure ensured success in forcing the white authorities to make changes. More focused than Adam Hochschild's Mirror at Midnight ( LJ 10/15/90) and more in depth than Anthony Heard's Cape of Storms ( LJ 9/15/90), this should sit beside them on the shelves of university and special collections.-- Louise Leonard, Univ. of Florida Lib., Gainesville
Booknews
Based on interviews with dozens of black South Africans who were politically active in the tumultuous 1980s, Mufson (staff writer, The Washington Post) provides an account of black politics in South Africa over the last decade. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
