Overview

With a versatile and expressive soprano voice and an instinctual knack for selling a song, Filippa Giordano could have merely been an international pop star. But it's the classical crossover world's gain that she has decided instead to use her talents to bring the glorious melodies of opera into the 21st century. If there's room in the world for a female counterpart to Andrea Bocelli, it's this young Italian singer. Make no mistake: Performing works by Bellini, Puccini, Verdi, Bizet, Saint-Saëns, and Gounod, Giordano turns in a strong pop performance. Even the angelic tones of Sarah Brightman pale in comparison to Giordano's way with an aria: She takes greater risks and gets closer to the passionate heart of this music, unafraid to rasp, riff, and wail like a soul singer to drive an emotion home. In excerpts from Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila and Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, among others, Giordano preserves and focuses on the sustained beauty of the original themes. Elsewhere, as in the "Habanera" from Bizet's Carmen, she has more fun with the heroine's display of seductive power, her voice multitracked at times in duet and chorus. The arrangements also bridge the gap between pop and classical, the primarily orchestral lushness occasionally spiced with synth touches and a subtle rhythm track. Rounding out the album are new songs written for Giordano by Francesco Sartori (who penned the hit "Con Te Partiro" ["Time to Say Goodbye"] for Bocelli) and film composer Ennio Morricone. Here Giordano displays another important skill for an international pop diva: excellent diction in English. Whether she chooses to continue crossing over into opera or to follow a pure pop career instead, all the signs suggest that we'll be hearing the voice of Filippa Giordano for a long time to come.
