Overview

Celebrating the Bard in all his bawdy glory, an eminent scholar puts the spotlight on the down-and-dirty sexual puns lurking in Shakespeare's work.

Everyone knows of his matchless understanding of the human condition, but we have been deprived for centuries of the full extent of one of Shakespeare's most brilliant dramatic devices. Restoring the saucy, often shocking meanings that lie beneath his words, Filthy Shakespeare gives modern readers a tour of the brothels, buggery, trannies, pimps, pricks, and other tawdry references populating his best-known works. The tension between sexual wordplay and politics provides a captivating historical backdrop, while the fascinating facts about life in Will's England make us see his masterworks in their gritty authenticity.

Revealing and riotously funny, Filthy Shakespeare is the perfect gift for anyone who wants to rediscover the master of the sexual pun at his most inventive.

Did not live up to what I expected

Sorry to say that though the book was informative and humorous at times, it was difficult to read. With such a fascinating looking at bawdy Shakespeare, I had hoped for more of a laugh and a shock or two. Maybe being from "across the pond" warped my ability to have more fun. It was interesting to see what was and is there in the plays we have seen! I will look at the next Shakespeare production with more attention.

    What Shakespeare Really Means

My high school seniors found the parts I read from this book to be absolutely hilarious. As a scholar, we know Shakespeare can be extremely filthy. Now any student of Shakespeare can read and understand the true meanings behind his words.

Shakespeare is great fun, especially if you know what he is saying

This is a great book for people who love Shakespeare, and also those who have found his plays hard to read or watch. Most of his plays have lots of sexual references and jokes, sometimes hidden, sometimes obvious. If you watch a Shakespeare play in England the audience is laughing and smiling at these jokes all the time. In the US, most people don't get the jokes, and so are less likely to appreciate the greatest writer in the English language. This book lets you in on the secrets. I bought this book for my 16-year-old son at his request. (It was recommended by the drama teacher and theater director at his high school, where they put on a Shakespeare play almost every year.) I thought, "Oh, well, he wants it and the teacher thinks it's a good book so I will get it for him." Then I picked it up and was fascinated. You will be too - give it a chance. And the more of this book you read, the more you will enjoy watching and reading Shakespeare's plays.
