Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
First published in Astounding magazine in 1940, Final Blackout is generally considered Hubbard's best science fiction novel. Set in a world ravaged by 30 years of war, it chronicles the rise, in England, of the charismatic leader, strategist and statesman known only as the Lieutenant. As a depiction of a blighted world, the novel is compelling, even riveting: as it increasingly concerns itself with the Lieutenant it loses some of its power, but it still remains a superior piece of pulp adventure writing. The book is also interesting as an early showcase of some of Hubbard's ideas on the condition of the world, and history's need for extraordinary individuals--ideas he later developed in Dianetics and Scientology. The volume also contains a preface by Hubbard written for a 1948 edition of the novel, and an adulatory introduction by science fiction writer Algis Budrys, in which extravagant claims are made about the novel and its author. An even more adulatory, unsigned profile concludes the volume. Caveat emptor. 100,000 first printing; $100,000 ad/promo. (May)
From the Publisher

"Like Fatherland, Hubbard spins a masterful tale of suspense and nonstop action in Final Blackout."Harold Robbins

"Final Blackout is as perfect a piece of science fiction as has ever been written." Robert A. Heinlein

"Chilling and lucid." Kirkus Reviews

Meet the Author

With 19 New York Times bestsellers and more than 230 million copies of his works in circulation, L. Ron Hubbard is among the most acclaimed and widely read authors of our time. As a leading light of American Pulp Fiction through the 1930s and '40s, he is further among the most influential authors of the modern age. Indeed, from Ray Bradbury to Stephen King, there is scarcely a master of imaginative tales who has not paid tribute to L. Ron Hubbard.

FINAL BLACKOUT: A Tale You Will Never Forget

Final Blackout is the type of novel that you end up thinking about long after youve read it. Hubbard has masterfully painted a tale of an extremely intelligent and well-versed strategiest known as the Lieutenant as he leads his men through the mucky, shelled atmosphere of a war-raped Europe. The most interesting aspect of the novel is the main character, the Lieutenant himself. A brave man with a hazy past and a sixth sense for war, the LT. has managed to keep his men together and as a result, they have formed what some may call a 'religous following.' Although the LT. is a static character thruought the story, everything he does is so calculated and precise and done only in the best interests of his men, and hence the LT. never bores the reader- especially when he makes twists and turns in his strategies. After reading this novel several times, i feel as though the LT. is someone i will forever compare myself to, as he is the most honorable man i have ever known of. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who is in search of a war novel or a new, daring role model.

    A good quick read.

Final Blackout is a hard-hitting novel staged in 1975 London, England. It is a story of a world torn by 30 years of war. Final Blackout is a story that revolves around a cunning leader, The Lieutenant, who through strategic moves and cunning tactics, captures the heart and loyalty of his soldiers. These soldiers are hardened cunning men themselves. These soldiers survived all of these years unharmed, when millions have died for no apparent cause other than for the pride of statesmen. The novel Final Blackout is a science fiction novel that shows the condition of the world if politicians¿ and statesman¿s pride ruled. The only thing that I have to complain about this book is that if you do not have any military experience, the book may become tricky to understand, so, read the first half carefully. Other science fiction books by L. Ron Hubbard include Dianetics, Battlefield Earth, Great Black Heroes, and A Piece of Blue Sky
