Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leigh Geiger
This colorfully illustrated easy reader is from the Pet Club series. All of the picture-book style books in this series use less than 300 words and are based on solving mysteries. In this 256-word book we find that Kayla, one of the four friends in the Pet Club, cannot find her cat. Her three friends and their pets all join in the search. The dog can sniff for the missing pet and the white mouse can search small places, but is a bit of a stretch, even for this age group, to see how the goldfish might be of help. However, the author tackles this minor issue and the story concludes with a satisfying ending. Young readers will find the pictures engaging and helpful in decoding the words and new vocabulary introduced evenly through the story. The text relies primarily on dialog which enhances the "read aloud" methods used by the target audience. A list of this vocabulary is offered at the end of the book for review. Helpful advice is offered for parents and care-givers to enhance reading comprehension and enjoyment. Stone Arch rates this book as Level 2 meaning that the longer sentences and higher vocabulary will necessitate some help with reading for the average early reader. Reviewer: Leigh Geiger, Ph.D.
