Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathy Leggett
This is the fifth story in the "Cork & Fuzz" easy-to-read series. In this early chapter book, which is sure to appeal to developing readers, Cork and Fuzz are best friends who find themselves in some of the same situations in which young children might find themselves when playing with friends. Cork is a short muskrat, and Fuzz is a tall opossum. They are both collectors. Cork loves to find things such as soft feathers and smooth sticks, while Fuzz likes to keep things, sometimes other people's things. As the story evolves, this difference becomes a problem for the friends. As Cork is playing with his favorite shiny green stone, he looses it. Fuzz finds it and decides that finders are keepers. Cork and Fuzz work through the problem and find out in the end that you cannot keep everything. The playful illustrations are full of excitement and expression. Young readers will delight in the mystery of the chip-mouse and how he helps Cork and Fuzz to agree on who should keep the shiny green stone. An easy read-aloud for non-readers and a perfect transition book for young readers ready for the challenge of longer, more complicated text, this short book is sized for small hands and is a very fun read. Best friends Cork the muskrat and Fuzz the possum ("kind of the same, but different") continue their adventures when Fuzz finds Cork's new green stone, recently lost, and wants to keep it. They argue, but reconcile when a chipmunk makes off with the coveted item. This addition to the series maintains the characters' personalities as well as the authenticity of the friendship-like real children, they have to compromise and think the best of one another if they are to retain their relationship. McCue continues to give these characters a variety of expressions and convincing body language while remaining true to their animal natures. A welcome addition to easy-reader collections.-Lisa Egly Lehmuller, St. Patrick's Catholic School, Charlotte, NC

Kirkus Reviews
Cork the muskrat loves to find things like feathers and smooth sticks, while Fuzz the opossum likes to keep things like food in his mouth. These best friends, adorably drawn by McCue in ink and watercolor, come into mild conflict when Cork loses his best green stone and Fuzz finds it, chanting, "Finders keepers." Fuzz also finds a wiggling hump of fallen leaves. As the story progresses it becomes evident that Fuzz is not the brighter of the two: "Should I hit it?" he asks, brandishing a stick. Soon enough they discover a hidden chipmunk within the leaves, who enjoys playing his own game of finders keepers. Fifth in the series, this simple, sweet tale offers a lesson, wisely pronounced by Cork: "Sometimes we cannot keep the things we find." It's clear from these pals that true friendship can withstand all sorts of mishaps. This Level 3 in the Viking Easy-To-Read program offers a touch more in linguistic sophistication than the venerable Frog and Toad but definitely partakes of that timeless sensibility. (Early reader. 6-8)

Meet the Author

Dori Chaconas was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1938. The second child in a family of seven, Dori fell into the role of storyteller, nursery rhyme singer, and general entertainer for her siblings. She claims she learned about story pacing early. If the story action lagged, her fidgety audience would either scatter or start a poking war.

She has been married to Nick, her high school sweetheart, for 44 years. Everyone says the romance will last. They raised four daughters, and are now enjoying three grandsons—especially Grandpa, having been outnumbered by women all those years.

When their daughters were young, Dori wrote for them. She published three picture books and more than fifty stories in children's magazines. In the 70's, her interest turned to yarn embroidery design and she sold designs to major needlework companies and national magazines.

In 1997, Dori started writing stories again, partly to keep her grandsons from fidgeting or starting poking wars. Her stories reflect the warmth of family life. Dori gives credit to her parents for giving her a strong sense of family, and to her children and grandchildren for keeping it alive.

Lisa McCue has illustrated many books for young
readers. She lives in Annapolis, Maryland.
