Meet the Author

Angela Shelton is an award-winning actress and filmmaker. She made her directorial debut with her documentary Searching for Angela Shelton in which she drove around the country meeting other women named Angela Shelton. She found that 70 percent had been victims of sexual assault or domestic violence. This surprising journey led Angela to confront her own abusive past. The multi-award winning documentary has started a grassroots movement of survivors and humanitarian organizations around the world to expose the extent of abuse suffered by American women. Angela received a certificate of appreciation from the United States Justice Department for her work and dedication on behalf of America's crime victims. She was also presented the Voice of Courage award from Darkness to Light, an organization with the goal of ending childhood sexual abuse. And she received the Award for Distinguished Service and Excellence in Film Media from The Leadership Council for Child Abuse and Interpersonal Violence and the Family Violence and Sexual Assault Institute in 2005. Angela has appeared on Oprah and 48 Hours Investigates. An exclusive version of her documentary, Searching for Angela Shelton aired on Lifetime TV in April 2006. In addition, Angela stars as the Safe Side Super Chick superhero who teaches children how to be safe in the Safe Side video series created by Baby Einstein creator Julie Clark and America's Most Wanted creator, John Walsh. She won a regional Emmy for her performance in this video series in 2005.

    Self Centered

Angela only cares about the woman she sees in the mirror. Very self centered! She puts on a great act to draw survivors in. Don't be fooled!

    An Uplifting Journey!

Breathtaking and poignant! This is the story of a woman who was lost inside finding herself and her mission during the course of one arduous yet uplifting spiritual odyssey that came to be the documentary "Searching For Angela Shelton". I was swept along on the journey by Angela's witty voice and compassion as she met other women across America sharing her name. Learning some of their stories while watching Angela follow her destiny and grow from an insecure victim into a survivor, a shining advocate against abuse, was tremendously inspiring. I wanted to be there too. Her spirit is infectious -- her story, a miracle.

Not every true story has a happy ending. This one does, and chronicles the start of an even more amazing feat: raising awareness for an abuse epidemic that is rapidly increasing; helping other victims to break the silence and heal; rallying an army of advocates to fight against abuse. Angela is doing all this and more. "Finding Angela Shelton" is how her movement began. I highly recommend that everyone read the book at some point in their lives. It will be one you never forget.

    Amazing book

I recieved this book as a gift and when I picked it up to start reading it I couldn't put it down. I read half the book in one night. Genuinely touching, thought provoking, and heart wrenching. Lays bare the ugly underbelly of abuse and neglect of women and children every day in america yet is heartwarming as it also shows that the survivors have an amazing ability to connect and heal. Even if you have never experienced the horrors in the book, it is truely inspirational.

    Inspirational

Angela Shelton took on what she thought would be an interesting way to document the thoughts and feelings of women in America. What better way to keep it fun than too search out her namesakes? What Angela did not expect to find were the number of women raped, molested, beaten, and abused. Before you decide to pass on this as another one of those depressing books, you would be surpised at the book's wittiness and humor. It does not make light of the serious topic it settles upon as the common bond these namesakes share. Instead it carries the reader through gently to the end as Angela discovers the similarities she shares with these other Angela Sheltons. In the end Angela faces her deepest fear, that of facing her abuser, and comes out much stronger as a result.

    A Call to Action!

When she was faced with the possibility of a writer's strike in 2001, Angela Shelton had an idea. She made some phone calls, rented an RV, gathered up a small crew and hit the road to film the documentary 'Searching for Angela Shelton'. She simply wanted to do a survey of how women were doing in America and she thought it would be funny and interesting to go in search of other women who shared her name. What she wasn't expecting to find was that 70 percent of the Angela Shelton's she would meet were survivors of sexual abuse. Being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, molestation and date rape herself, Angela soon realized that she was no longer alone. As she continued to travel across the country it became clear to her that she had to confront her abuser - her own father. In Finding Angela Shelton, armed with her sharp wit, strong determination and amazing courage Angela Shelton breaks her silence and shares her own history of sexual abuse and how she ultimately finds whom she had truly been searching for all along - herself. Finding Angela Shelton is a call to action for ALL survivors of abuse to take inspired action towards their own healing so that they too can break the cycle and start living empowered, joyous and fulfilling lives!

    Angela Shelton Found ME

Through the pages of this book Angela Shelton details the process of filming the documentary, 'Searching for Angela Shelton'. She discovers that while she believed she was surveying women in America she was truly searching for herself. After confronting her child molestor father on Father's Day Angela realizes how her own self-abuse has impacted many aspects of her life. Through this journey and the insight and wisdom that she learns from the other Angela Sheltons she takes action to heal herself and teach others how to do the same. I now truly believe that everything does happen for a reason. This book has given me the courage to not only find my own voice but to help others find theirs. My life will forever be changed because of the journey that Angela took and the joy it brought to all areas of my life.

    Finding Angela Shelton

Angela Shelton traveled across the US in search of women who shared her name. Her idea was to survey these women and get an idea of how each one was progressing in life. The unexpected began, and she discovered that 70 percent of them had been raped, beaten or molested. A survivor of childhood incest, physical abuse, and date rape herself, she knew in her soul that she was touching the surface of something huge. She made her documentary, Searching For Angela Shelton, and even confronted her father on Father's Day. This book chronicles her amazing and insightful journey into the belly of the beast. She breaks her own silence and helps others do the same. Sometimes harrowing, sometimes funny, and always poignant, Angela Shelton searches for and ultimately finds what she needs to find to heal and live a joyful life. Her book will help anyone who reads it do the same.

This inspiring book is a gift in every sense of the word! It not only provides an honest and sobering look at domestic violence and it's fallout, but it also illuminates the beautiful power of one person's story. The individual Angela Shelton stories weave a collective journey of faith, hope, unity and strength. The only problem I have with this book, is who to loan it to first!

This courageous book chronicles one woman¿s life-changing journey across the country to find herself reflected in the lives and stories of others. As she interviewed women who shared her name, she came to the awful realization that far too many of them shared her past, as well¿a history marked by violence and sexual abuse. But beyond their common suffering was a common hope, an unshakeable will to live that ultimately gave Angela the courage to confront her past and embrace a future filled with joy. Angela Shelton is not alone in her journey. As I read this book, I realized that it¿s not just Angela who was searching for herself, hoping to find her own voice and the power to make a positive impact on the world I found myself on the journey with her, seeking and finding myself in the courageous, heartbreaking, and inspiring stories and lives of the ordinary women Angela met along the way. This journey forever changed Angela Shelton, opening her to faith again, and wholeness, creating a passionate activist against violence and abuse. It will doubtless challenge readers to reclaim lost pieces of their souls as they read this amazing book.
