Overview

The news is full of stories about the state of the publishing industry. Change is everywhere. Debates abound as to who is responsible: big publishing houses, online stores or the meteoric rise of ebooks. Publishers, large and small, are leaving the tasks of marketing and promotion up to the author. If you're not already a best selling author, what's a writer to do? They need to do it themselves.

The problem is that while most authors are aware they need to promote and market their book, they have no clue how to go about it. There are hundreds of resources teaching a writer how to create character and develop plot, how to format book proposals and how to pitch to literary agents and publishers; but very few on how an author implements success after the book is finished. Can an author promote an ebook the same as a print book? Is a self-published book as easy to market as a traditionally published book? The questions can be overwhelming and locating the answers, even trickier.

Welcome to Finding Author Success: Discovering and Uncovering the Marketing Power Within Your Manuscript. Deborah Riley-Magnus, an author and author success coach with years of successful marketing and promotion experience, takes tried and true marketing, publicity and promotional strategies and tailors them for the unique needs of today's author. Every element is outlined and explained for easy implementation. You will learn:

How to develop a functional and strong book business plan;
The power of developing effective, targeted platforms;
The basics of publicity, marketing and promotion;
How cross marketing works and why it's magic for an author; and,
How to personalize it all to your book.

Finding Author Success will take away the mystery about gaining sales and increasing exposure for your book and you as a professional author.

    A MUST-HAVE BOOK FOR AUTHORS AND AUTHORS-TO-BE

    By the time you¿re done reading this review, something about the publishing landscape will have probably changed. Who doesn¿t need a hand in navigating the crazy world of publishing? Authors, whether traditionally or independently published, play a key role in determining their own success in an ever-evolving market. As author Riley-Magnus tells us, more than enough times, she¿s heard authors voice the same concern: ¿But ... but ... I¿m a writer, not a salesperson!¿ Having the talent to write a good, marketable book is simply not enough. Today, an author must know how to promote and sell it. An author must have a plan and know how to stay on top of the marketplace. In a clear, no-nonsense, comprehensive, and simple manner, Riley-Magnus ¿sits down¿ with authors and conducts a one-on-one class on how to market your book. And, like any good teacher, she gives assignments to help her students learn. From understanding book platforms vs. author platforms, social networking, the three Ps (promotion, publicity, procrastination), cross promoting, author do¿s and don¿ts and so much more, Finding Author Success is a virtual cornucopia of information for the author or author-to-be. The book is exceptionally well organized, and the information is easy to locate and understand. It¿s written for authors with a very small budget or no budget at all. Riley-Magnus offers a wealth of knowledge and experience that each author can tailor to suit his/her own needs. I believe authors will especially appreciate the TEN TOOLS FOR AUTHOR SUCCESS: A QUICK REFERENCE HANDBOOK at the end of the book ¿ most useful indeed. A highly recommended read. If you have or will have a book to promote and confused about how to go about it, you are likely to breathe a huge sign of relief after reading Finding Author Success.

    Ms Riley Magnus's book should be THE handbook for all authors. I

    Ms Riley Magnus's book should be THE handbook for all authors. It is highly informative and comprehensive with brilliant analogies for marketing and promoting books. Never before have I thought of marketing in relation to meatballs. By using her own experiences from her professional time as a chef she leaves us salivating and hungry for more throughout the book. Each chapter, whether it be on the concept of Geisha Marketing or the Roman Empire is clearly defined with sub-headings and further breakdowns exploring every avenue possible. There are assignments at every stage encouraging and guiding the author through the complex maze of getting the book into the public arena. If you are a veteran in this field there are still tips that you can pick up along the way. I love her sentence on page 125, "An author by definition is an overworked, overstressed, overstimulated, creative human being." So true! An author needs all the help he or she can get. So, buy this book and accept Ms Riley Magnus's help.

    Marilyn L Rice, author of 'Time & Tide', 'No Regrets', 'Stay in Touch', 'Look After Each Other' and 'Sofia's Legacy'.
