Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This well-meaning introduction to common birds found in the Chesapeake Bay wetlands focuses on Regan and Ethan who are off on their own (which some parents might question) with a ranger's list of birds they might find on their walk. They describe what they see in wooden dialog. Additional text rounds out the bird under discussion with accurate information and enough detail to sort out the bird from similar ones. Each double-page spread considers one bird (or sometimes more) in a half-page bar of text and a page-and-a half watercolor of the background bird framed in fanciful tendrils, cattails and other flora. An overlaid larger circle shows the bird close-up, while another smaller circle shows something else—a female of the species or another similar, slightly different bird. Without labels, it is hard for the novice to know what is pictured, and this non-specific format doesn't help clarify the text. For instance, the Canada Goose text mentions the snow goose secondarily, but there is no smaller picture to illuminate their differences. In a discussion of the tundra swan, the mute swan is in the background and the smaller vignette, while tundra gets the big circle treatment. Birds introduced include the great blue heron, snowy egret, laughing gull, red-wing blackbird, marsh wren, bald eagle, mallard, canvasback and the redhead contrasted, osprey, and several others. While the book informs, one wishes for a more careful design. Back endpapers depict all the birds discussed but an interior library pocket or other labeling will block at least some of the artwork. 2001, Tidewater, $11.95. Ages 6 to 9. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
