Karen Marie Moning has called Stacia Kane’s Downside Ghosts series “dark, sexy urban fantasy at its finest.” Now, in this breathtakingly suspenseful eBook novella, Kane has written a prequel to her thrilling series. Before Chess Putnam was a magic-wielding Churchwitch, she was a student in the Church of Real Truth—with a keen sensitivity to magic, a strong rebellious streak, and a penchant for self-destruction. And in Finding Magic, a grisly ghost murder becomes Chess’s baptism of fire.

When eighteen-year-old Chess Putnam is offered the chance to train with a special team of investigators known as the Black Squad, she feels torn. She’s never been a team player and hates how one male Inquisitor condescends to “the new kid.” But at her first bloody crime scene, she gets a taste for investigation—and is hooked on the high. Though the seasoned Inquisitors consider the series of ghost murders random events, Chess starts to detect a pattern. Is a psycho killer summoning ghosts from the City of Eternity and using them as murder weapons? As Chess gets closer to the dark truth, she puts herself in grave danger and risks losing everything she’s fought so hard for.

Finding Magic is a prequel to Stacia’s ‘Downside Gho

Finding Magic is a prequel to Stacia’s ‘Downside Ghosts’ series. The series is an Urban Fantasy about 18 year old Cesaria ‘Chess’ Putnam, a professional paranormal Debunker. There is a high level of paranormal activity in this book and makes mention of Magic, but not a lot of it is shown. This book delves us into the psyche of our Heroine Chess and where she came from before earning her position with the Church.

This storyline gives us a wonderful look into where she came from. Stacia does an excellent job describing Chess’ inner fears and a great look at her abusive history. The author perfectly describes her as the hard-edged, soft-hearted female she is. The plot starts in the last year of her education and a week-long training period on the Black Squad.

After accepting the training request from Elder Hancock, she is thrown into the middle of a murder investigation. Chess’ trainer, Jillian, and the other members of the Black Squad want to blow this off as another random ghost killing and leave Chess in the classroom where she belongs. These are accepted occurrences since Haunted Week 15 years prior when the ghosts made their presence known and put an end to all organized religion.

Chess disagrees with their decision and pushes to do her own investigation into the subjects involved. Jillian allows Chess to investigate the killings, thinking she can placate her and teach her a lesson at the same time. The investigation drags up bad memories of her past that she is forced to deal with the only way she knows how: Vodka.

Chess’ hunches prove correct, quite to her dismay, as she and her trainer are captured by the ghost controlling assassin. Thanks to her quick (or drug induced) thinking the ending is a complete surprise to this reader and makes me crave the rest of the series, that I MUST now go purchase to follow the rest of the exploits of Chess and her Debunking career.

After reading this book from front to back in a 5 hour period, I can honestly say it is riveting and will definitely keep your interest peaked and your free time full. 5 stars from this reviewer, and I am now a fan of Stacia Kane. Thank you for writing this series.

    MUST read for Downside fans.

Even though Finding Magic is a prequel in the Downside Ghosts series, I think that existing fans of the series will get more enjoyment out of it than someone that is new to the series. The reason is that we get to see a younger Chess and how she starts her downward slid into drug addiction and it gives you more insite into how she could have let it happen. The younger Chess is really just a slightly different version of the Chess we all know. Instead of her reaching for her pill box when her past memories get the best of her, she is reaching for a flask filled with vodka. We follow Chess through her first unofficial Church case while she is training with the Black Squad. She doesn't want to work with the squad because let's face it, Chess is not a team player and is happier when she is working alone. Chess also meets Elder Griffin in this novella and we get to see how their relationship gets it's start. The young Chess is not new to Downside but since she is not a Church employee yet she is still living on campus while she does her training so she doesn't have her own place in Downside yet. And when she visits Downside my heart skips a beat, waiting and hoping to get a sneak peek at a younger Terrible. Finding Magic, it's a Downside Ghosts fan MUST read.
