Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joan Carris
Think about this: "Whales are so difficult to study that when your parents were your age (about 30-40 years ago), nearly everything known about whales was learned by looking at their skeletons!" Luckily for us, this is a "now" book-full of what today's marine scientists have learned. For example: teenage male killer whales babysit their younger brothers and sisters. And killer whales that live in different areas of the world "speak" different languages. And there's so much more! The latest information about blue whales, humpbacks, grays, belugas, and killer whales make this a must-have introductory text.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-How do scientists research whale behaviors and lifestyles, with their subjects leading mysterious lives shrouded by vast oceans, tremendous distances, and prodigious depths? Surely this question is asked by many a young researcher looking for information on one cetacean or another. Kelsey provides some answers by reporting on current investigations on five different whale species: studies conducted by marine biologists and other scientists working in the field and in controlled aquarium environments. The data they are compiling may settle some questions and will surely lead to others, creating a demand for further investigation and observation. Crisp, full-color photos add visual interest to the lively, informative text. While this slim book will not serve as a single source of information on whales, it will provide enlightenment on how some of the data in more comprehensive volumes was compiled, open a window into a little-reported area of scientific research, and perhaps set some young minds on the path of investigatory careers in the field of science.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY
Kirkus Reviews
In the Science Explorers series, a glossy browsing book that poses questions about seven species of whales. The most interesting aspect of this title is the current research on blue, humpback, gray, beluga, and killer whales. For each species, Kelsey presents a handsome full-color photograph, two or three questions in red typeface, and a column of research notes in green. Each question is then discussed in an illustrated spread. The answers are brief and unsatisfactory, while the research notes are marginal. This is, however, a snappy, interesting approach to current science; give it to children as a good first peek, then send true whale enthusiasts on to other sources for more background information on the various species.
